LATE SIR MAUI POMARE.
ASHES REACH TRIBAL HOME. By Telegraph—Press Association NEW PLYMOUTH, August 29. With all due ceremonial and in traditional Maori style, the ashes of Sir Maui Pomare arrived from Waikanae this morning and were received at Manukonihi Pa. Waitara, the headquarters of his tribe. The train brought the Hons. R. A. Masters. J. G. Coates, S. G. Smith, Sir A. T. Ngata and 16 other members of Parliament, some with their wives. The chief mourners were Lady Pomare, her daughter and two sons. The casket was taken from the station to the pa in a hearse followed by some 50 cars. At the gates of the pa a group of 100 native women received the ashes with a mae mae dance, wearing and waving greenery. They receded before the warriors bearing the casket, till the later was laid amongst beautiful rugs and mats on the centre of a marae. Speeches followed in tribute to Sir Maui Pomares' work. There were about 2500 people at the pa. The funeral will probably take place on Sunday.
