SCOUTS
NEWS AND NOTES. St. Mary’s had a good muster on Friday and it was ascertained that the following distinctions were gained for the Troop by passing the Ambulance Test:—R. Beit, 2nd Grade All Round Cords; Rex Jones and Lloyd Morrison, King’s Scouts. Scouters Smith and Cook of Northdown are presenting a medal for the most efficient Scout in the Troop for the month.
Chalmers have been working assiduously preparing for the concert held last night. These notes were sent to print prior to the appearance of the play but Chalmers are assured of the best wishes of all Scouts and Scouters for a very successful function.
Northdown have two Scouts with one more badge to gain before they assume King’s Scout status.—Best of luck, boys.
The rule that all business in connection with Scouting in Timaru and affecting the Scouters must be tabled at the regular meetings of the Association, is an effective one as was evidenced at the meeting of Scouters held during the week. The meeting was no dull affair and several important arrangements were finalised. In connection with the bag and bottle drive it was arranged that this effort is to take place from the 25th to 29th instants, and depots and districts were ailoted to each Troop. The necessity of all Scouts in uniform was particularly stressed and no credit is to be given any Scout who does not collect in uniform. A small trophy in the form of a Scout’s Diary is to be given to every Scout who obtains 75 bottles or more. In addition the Commissioner will supply the Troop that obtains the greatest number of bottles with patrol flags. Every Troop will keep to their own districts so that no overlapping will take place.
It has been arranged that the annual meeting of all Committees, and others interested will be held in the Ambulance Hall on Thursday, 13th September, at 8 o’clock. It behoves all Scouts and Cubs to remind their parents of this event. The active cooperation of all parents is essential to the welfare of the Scout movement.
All census papers are to be completed and returned to the D.SM. by the end of the month. As Headquarters desire to forward the returns of strength to the Imperial Headquarters by the end of September no hitch must occur on our part. Unfortunately the examinations of the First Class Board will ndt be included in this year's oensus returns.
As the chairman of the Coal and Blanket Fund is appealing to the residents of Timaru to assist us in the drive next week we on oar part wifi do our best. Every street must be combed thoroughly, and if for any reason a Scout is not able to complete his portion, he must notify his Scouter immediately. Scouters will do their “turn” on the Saturday afternoon following. Arid remember the Commissioner’s trophies are worth striving for. The patrol flag is the leader’s privilege.
A sub-committee has been formed to arrange for the annual social of Scouters. On the opinions expressed it appears that this year a dance will be held as part of the programme. A double purpose will be served I understand in that everybody will be able to enjoy themselves yet they will be able to repay a “good turn.”
