ARE WE BEING TOO CLEVER?

It is time this craze for cleverness stopped. Men and women to-day seem to think that one thing, and one thing only, is demanded of them—and that is that they should shine by an everready tongue and a biting wit. Their minds, so they imagine, must be working at racing speed, without showing signs of fatigue, and they must be mentally on the quivive every minute of the day, for fear they should be caught “napping” by the next person. We see them all round us, these men and women, who want to be clever. They have a strained, tired look, and their voices are studied and unnatural.

using it in just the same manner. A good dusting powder for the palms of the hands can be prepared by mixing together equal parts of powdered borax and rice powder. It should be dusted over the palms after using the solution, but care must be taken to see that they are perfectly dried first.

An excellent method of whitening the hands is as follows:—Wash the hands and arms in the usual way and rub in some pure glycerine before drying them. Then apply plenty of slightly tinted powder, taking care that the shade is in keeping with one's general characteristics (whether blonde or brunette). Let it remain on for a few seconds, then gently dry the skin. Sufficient powder will remain on to remove any redness, and at the same time the glycerine will give a very soft texture to the skin. The same treatment maye be successfully adopted to prevent “redness” showing through silk stockings, a point that is too often overlooked. Powdered borax is useful for dusting inside the stockings, diluted with a little rice powder, as it keeps the feet delightfully cool.
