EMPIRE GAMES IN CANADA.
New Zealand’s Success. ROWING EVENTS OPENED. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyrigb c MONTREAL. August 19. At Hamilton, in the Empire bowling singles. Fielding (New Zealand), defeated Reid (Canadian champion', 21 to 20, in a stirring 28-end struggle. Reid was within a point of winning after leading throughout, but was unable to count the necessary shot to win. Fielding trailed with 16 when the Canadian had 20 and then counted 2 and a pair of singles to tie the score. On the deciding end, the New Zealander placed his draw six inches from kitty at the third attempt and Reid’s runner was a clean miss. In the rinks, England defeated Scotland by 19 to 16, and Canada defeated South Africa 29 to 14. Rowing. At Hamilton, Bile and Richards (Canada), won the double sculls. England won the eight-oared rowing championship. R. Pearce (Australia), won the special quarter-mile dash from a field of five rowers, including Joe Wright, Canadian singles champion and former diamond sculls winner at the opening of rowing at the Empire Games. Pearce and Wright shot into the lead, Wright holding a quarter-length lead on the Australian at the half-way mark. Then Pearce’s long powerful strokes carried him on even terms. Fifty yards from the finish, Wright’s shell nearly collided with Pearce’s. He stopped pulling but Pearce shoved clear, to win by several yards. Ethel Catherwood won the running high jump, also the javelin throw.
Women’s Championships. Following are the winners of the Canadian Women’s Championships held in connection with the Empire Games: — Sixty Metres (Junior).—lrene Storey. Time, Bsec. Intermediate.—Lilian Palmer. Time, 7sec. Senior.—Myrtle Cook. Time, 7sec. 100 Metres (Senior, Women). — Myrtle Cook. 100 Metres, Senior Hurdles. —Miss F. Bell. Time—l 6 l-10sec. Lachine Rowing Club (Montreal), defeated Hamilton Leanders in an eightoared race by inches. Whelpton, of Leanders, won the international single sculls. FURTHER RESULTS. BRIDSON SECURES A SECOND. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyrignt (Received August 20, 8.33 p.m.) MONTREAL, August 19. At the swimming on Tuesday night, Joyce Cooper (England) won the women’s 100 yards free style, creating a new Canadian record of 67 seconds, Ellen King (Scotland) was second, and Valerie Davis (Wales) third. In the women’s springboard diving, O. Whitesett (South Africa) was first, Doris Ogilvie (Canada) second, and Molly Bailey (Canada) third. Canada won the men’s 800 yards relay. England was second. Ryan (Australia) swam marvellously in winning the men’s 1500 yards freestyle. Bridson (New Zealand) was second and Bureligh (Canada) third. EIGHT-OARED BOAT RACE. NEW ZEALAND SECOND.
