The annual congregation meeting of the Geraldine Presbyterian Church was held on Tuesday evening, the Rev. W. J. Couling presiding over an excellent attendance. Annual reports were presented by the following:—Session and Sunday School, Mr K. Mackenzie; Senior Girls’ Bible Class, Miss R. Moyle; Junior Girls’ Bible Class. Miss S. Vincent; Senior Men's Bible Class, Mr E. H. Turner, Junior Boys’ Bible Class, Mr E. H. Turner; Girls’ Auxiliary and Girls’ Club, Miss E. Sherratt; Busy Bees, Mr J. Fraser; P.W.M.P., Miss McLean; treasurer’s report, Mr K. Mackenzie. The Clerk of the Deacon’s Court (Mr N. McGregor), reported that a very successful year’s progress had been recorded, and despite the financial stringency the very satisfactory total for receipts was £505/10/-. The credit balance on the year’s working amounted to £l2/11/7. Apart from this the Ladies’ Association had raised the gratifying total of £204/12/4, and after deducting expenses for services of caretaker and material, they had a credit balance of £l5B/14/9. The managers thanked all who had assisted in any way during the year, especially Mr Couling for his faithful labours as preacher and pastor, Miss E. Sherratt for her valuable services as organist, the choir, Sabbath and Bible Class teachers, the treasurer, and the various collectors, and also the ladies for their floral decorations.

Other reports showed that all departments of the church had been well maintained and were in a prosperous state.

Mr Couling expressed pleasure at seeing so many present, and acknowledged his indebtedness to the congregation who had greatly encouraged him by their loyalty and kindness. He also specially thanked all the helpers of the church. Miss McLean stated that at the last meeting of the Ladies’ Association they had decided that the credit balance raised by them be deposited as a nucleus to a fund for a new church, unless any more useful way for investing the money in the interest of the church could be found. After a discussion it was decided that the treasurer (Mr E. Twigg), wait on the Ladies’ Association at their annual meeting to discuss the matter with them.

Votes of thanks to the Deacon’s Court, the Ladies’ Association, and the treasurer were carried by acclamation. Supper prepared by the ladies was then served and brought the very successful meeting to a close. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. The annual general meeting of the Geraldine Horticultural Society was held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday evening. Rev. E. P. Blakiston presided over a good attendance. The annual report, read by the secretary (Mr J. Slattery), showed that during the past year two successful shows one in the spring and one the summer, had been held. The Society thanked all their helpers, and all who had given special prizes and donations.

The report and the balance sheet, which showed a credit of £2 were adopted. Although last year’s entries for the shows were not as large as in former years, it was decided to carry on through the coming season. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—Patron, Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P.; president, Rev. E. N. Blakiston; vice-presidents, Mrs J. M. H. Tripp, Mrs J. S. Thompson, Mrs Rodman, Mrs Fish. Mrs G. A. McDonald, Mr R. A. Dixon and Mr G. I. Hamilton; committee, Mesdames Cliff, and Mitchelmore, Misses A. M. Howell, R. Williams, L. Hawke and Messrs W. T. Turner, G. H. Patrick, A. M. Fyfe, A. V. Simmons, G. W. Coombs, W. Henry and J. Slattery; auditor, Mr T. M. Bannehr; secretary and treasurer (not yet appointed). The secretary (Mr J. Slattery) stated that he could not see his way to carry on his duties next year, and his re-

signation was accepted with regret. The president and other members spoke in high terms of the active interest taken in the Society during past years by Mr Slattery, who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for the work he had done. It was decided to hold the spring show early in October, but no definite date was arranged, and a schedule committee was set up to make necessary arrangements.

Messrs John R. Procter. Ltd., the well-known Opticians, of Christchurch, will be visiting Geraldine again during September. Appointments can now be made by ringing Mr Morris Williams, (61)
