WARNING TO SMOKERS

FIRE AT PETROL PUMP. By Telegraph—Press Association HAWERA, August 20. A sequel to a blaze in the vicinity of a street petrol bowser on the night of August 2, took place in court today, when Ronald Payne was fined £3 for bringing a naked light within 10 feet of the fuel tank of a car which was being filled with petrol. Payne struck a match to light a cigarette. The fumes over the tank and the bowser hose ignited, and a serious situation was averted narrowly, the flames being smothered with a sack.

The Borough Inspector said a heavy penalty was not asked, the charge being brought as a warning. A maximum penalty of £IOO was provided.
