FAIRLIE.
1.0.0. F. The fortnightly meeting of Gladstone Lodge, 1.0.0. F., was presided over by Bro. L. Reid, N.G. There was a fair attendance of members. Correspondence was read and received. The Social Committee was instructed to arrange a card match with the Fair lie Miniature Rifle Club. The secretary stated that the Grand Secretary would visit the Lodge on September 2. A welcome was extended to Bro. Elms, who was present, after being away from the district for some time. Sick, maternity and medical aid accounts were passed for payment, and the Lodge was closed in the customary manner. RIFLE SHOOTING. The weekly shoot was held on the Rifle Club's range. A. Dale won the silver button for the week, and also a trophy. The following were the scores:—A. Dale 79, J. Thompson 78, H. Welsh 76, W. Whitehead 75, R. Ferguson 75, W. H. Cook 74, D. Gardner 74, W. The Kimbell School Committee held a successful dance in aid of the school funds on Friday night. There was a large attendance, and a very enjoyable evening was spent by all present. Supper was provided by the ladies. Mrs Richards supplied the music. Extras were played by Miss Angland and by Mr Howey with radio. Opportunity was taken to make a presentation to Miss Pearl Schute, who is shortly to be married. Mr Munro, in making the presentation, referred to the many good qualities of the recipient. Miss Schute had been always ready to assist in any project for the good of the district, and during her term as post-mistress she had been obliging and courteous. Mr Munro said that the beautiful gift (a case of cutlery) testified to the esteem in which Miss Schute was held by the residents of Kimbell. Mr J. Bain replied on behalf of Miss Schute. WOMEN'S INSTITUTE. The monthly meeting of the Fairlie Women’s Institute was held in the Parish Hall. The president (Mrs Me William) was in the chair. Aiier general business had been discussed, Mrs G. A. M. Macdonald v,Orari) gave a very interesting talk on the Women’s Institute. A papier mache demonstration by Mrs Brenton (Orari) was much appreciated, and a competition was arranged for the follo\..ng meeting. Mrs H. Mitchell, "Canfield,” demonstrated a cottage tea cosy of felt and wool work, and patterns were given .>ut for next meeting. Mrs Barnes, jricklewood, exhibited a good sample A picture-framing work. A musical parcel competition was .von by Miss Dunn. Twenty new members were elected. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Lyons and Barnes. COLLIE DOG CLUB. The annual general meeting of the Mackenzie Collie Dog Club was held j at Burkes Pass on Saturday night, j Present: —Messrs W. Mclntosh, R. Cowan, C. Mclntosh, G. Ross, H. Knubley, A. Allan, A. Ballantyne, D. Leishman, E. McLaren, and the secretary, Mr A. S. Smith. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs N. Cotterill and George Keefe. Mr A. Ballantyne was voted to the chair, in the unavoidable absence of the president (Mr F. Creighton). Votes of thanks were passed to all those who had rendered assistance in carrying out the annual trials. • Votes of thanks were accorded to Mesdames Hayter, Scott and Ross for the use of grounds; to Messrs Elliott Bros, (judges); to Messrs Murray, Grant, and Urquhart for donations; to Messrs J. Page and Allan, and to Mr J. McKinnon for the use of paddocks for grazing, and to the numerous donors of special prizes. ! The chairman expressed pleasure . at the presence of Mr R. Cowan (one of the oldest and most consistent supporters of the Club) after an absence from the district for some time. Hunter - Weston, D. Urquhart, T. Hogg, H. Knubley and R. Cowan; general committee, Messrs D. Smith, Black Bros., J. Aitken, J. Nisbett, A. Rae, J. McDonald, E. Clarke, 1 A. Ross, D. Leishman, E. McLaren, R. Green, P. Allan, N. Cotterill, J. McKinnon, Mackenzie Bros., P. Hunter-Weston and T. Quigley; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. S. Smith. A number of names were submitted for the position of honorary judge, the 1 secretary being instructed to write to j them, and a final selection to be made ! at a later meeting. After considerable discussion, it was agreed to retain last year's programme
of four events, to be run under similar conditions. Messrs Smith and Leishman advocated the adding of an extra event for maiden competitors and dogs, to run as a sweepstake, the entry to be 5/-. A motion to this effect was formally carried. On the motion of Messrs Smith and Allan, it was agreed that a miniature Cup be presented annually to the winner of the “Runholders’ Cup.” SALEYARDS COMPANY. The annual general meeting of the Fairlie Creek Saleyards Company was held on Saturday afternoon. Present: Messrs E. Goodwin (in the chair), J. Mclntosh, W. Wreford. and the secretary (Mr A. S. Smith). A motion of sympathy was passed to the Gillingham family, in their recent bereavement, and the secretary was instructed to convey this by letter. ■ The secretary read the balance sheet, which was considered satisfactory, and j was passed accordingly. ! The chairman, in a brief report of last year’s operations, stated that the successful institution of a ewe fair was deemed highly successful, and it was decided that a letter be forwarded to the South Canterbury Stock Auctioneers’ Association recommending its adoption, and hoping to find a ewe and ram fair established annually, at, possibly, an earlier date than last year. It was also decided to draw the Association’s attention to the fact that a lamb fair might also be advantageously introduced. j The election of officers resulted in all present officers being re-elected. I A complimentary vote was passed to the president (Mr E. Goodwin) for his work on the Company’s behalf, and to the secretary and caretaker for their satisfactory attention to their work. It was decided to pay the dividend on the same basis as last year. The usual bonuses were passed to the secretary and caretaker, and the wish was expressed that the health of the latter would soon improve. It was decided that the inspection of the yards, and carrying out of the desired improvements, be attended to. It was agreed to adhere to the usual dipping arrangements. The question of the introduction of a new dipping preparation was held over in the meantime. It was decided to open the dip for use as soon as the necessary stock was offering, the secretary to make arrangements during the caretaker’s absence. PLUNKET SOCIETY DANCE. On Friday, the Fairlie branch of the Plunket Society held a successful dance in aid of the funds. The weather was fine, and the attendance was large. Music was supplied by a Timaru orchestra. Messrs C. Boulter and F. Geaney carried out tne duties of M.C’s. The Mackenzie Highland Pipe Band was in attendance, and played selections outside the hall, and also supplied music for extra dances. FOOTBALL. The annual game for the Burnett Memorial Shield, between the premier club teams in the Waimate and Mackenzie Sub-Unions, will be played at Fairlie on Thursday, between Southern (Waimate) and Fairlie. The following will represent the Fairlie Club:—McCouchie, McNeill, Forrester, Black, Gibson. P. Keenan (captain), J. Keenan, Williams, D. O’Reilly, Everest, Talbot, Stevenson, R. O’Reill. , O’Neill, Macdonald, Strowger, and Giddings.
