HIGH SCHOOL BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Timaru High School Board of Governors waa held yesterday. Present—Mr S. D. Mason (acting-chairman), Mrs B. H. Low, and Messrs W. D. Campbell, J. G. Gow, W. D. Revell, W. Scott, Ross Brodie, J. T. Hay and A. H. Bain. A welcome was extended to Mr Ross Brodie, representative of the Geraldine County Council. Rector’s Report. The Rector (Mr W. Thomas, M.A.) reported that the annual Rugby match against Waitaki had been played at Oamaru, and both games had been won. The second fifteen, and the under 9 stone team were successful also against Ashburton High School teams. The first fifteen were to leave for Invercargill on Saturday to play in the tournament. Mr Roy Dixon, M.Sc., who was going to England for research study, would leave at the end of the term. The Rector desired to place on record his conscientious and loyal services to the School. Mr J. Allport, of Gore High School, would fill the vacancy on the staff.— The report was adopted. Appointments. The Appointments Committee reported that since last meeting, Mr J. Allport had been appointed to the “D.” position rendered vacant at the Boys’ High School by the resignation of Mr J. R. Dixon; and Miss Olive Dixon had been selected for a relieving position on the staff of the Girls’ School for 1931, during the absence in England, of Miss E. H. Lee. Inspectors’ Reports. Messrs E. Caradus and J. B. Mawson, Inspectors of Secondary Schools, reported in regard to the work at the Boys’ School. Since the last inspection report, the curriculum had broadened on the agricultural and manual side, while there had been development also in the direction of appreciation of art. The attention paid to singing continued to be a feature of the work of the School. The happy relations existing between principal, staff and boys were very noticeable. There was a good spirit of work throughout the School, while the tone and discipline were excellent. As always, the work of this School left a very favourable impression indeed. Messrs E. J. Parr and J. J. Hetherington reported on visiting the Girls* School as follows:—“The School is to be complimented both on the very satisfactory standard of attainment reached in the majority of subjects, and also on its liberal provision of varied courses of a non-academic type. Both these features, and the general tone and discipline of the School, reflect very great credit on the principal and her staff.” General. It was stated that the contract for additional cloakroom accommodation at the Girl’s School had been commenced that morning. A letter was received from the Jubilee Committee enclosing a cheque for the erection of the Memorial Gates at both Schools, and also the £IOO endowment from Miss McLean, to provide Scripture prizes at the Girls’ School. Hearty thanks were accorded expupils for their enthusiasm in raising the necessary funds. Accounts amounting to £371 wer# passed for payment.
