(Special to the “Herald.”) CHRISTCHURCH, August 14. The weather was bright, though keen, for Grand National Hurdles day, and the course was in excellent condition. The big race ended in a ridiculously easy win for the South Canterbury candidate Carinthia, who gave a magnificent display of jumping, and had the race won a long way from home. His stamina was never really tested, as Thompson never had to flick the whip at him, and was looking round in the straight. Carinthia was turned out in splendid order by F. Trilford, whose father won the race with Hylans in 1920. Aurora Borealis went well under her light weight, and did better than the majority of National Steeplechase winners which have raced in the Hurdles. The Beaufort Steeplechase also was won by a South Canterbury horse, though Kapuna is trained at Wingatui. Town Major just failed in the Islington Handicap to make a South Canterbury treble in the three most important races of the day. Mountain Guide sustained severe head injuries when he fell in the National Hurdles. There was another substantial drop in the totalisator returns, but it was not so marked as on the previous days of the carnival. An Easy Victory. Tractarian was served up an odds-on chance in the Hunt Cup, 700 chances above Diana’s Lad. with Taramoa 125 chances further away. Double Soult led over the first fence from Tractarian, Taramoa and Kulrange. The Kennels double accounted for Diana’s Lad and Peterette, and Marco Polo and Akbar crashed at the big brush at the home turn. At the stand double, Double Soult was eight lengths ahead of Tractarian, Kaikahu and Parader, but he jumped the second leg badly. The Washdyke horse led into the back still well clear of Tractarian, Kaikahu and Taramoa. but the favourite headed him at the post and rails. Double Soult was beaten at the Kennels double, from which Tractarian. Kaikahu and Taramoa went on fairly close together. Kaikahu could not sustain his effort, and Tractarian led Taramoa over the last two fences. Tractarian came on to win easily by ten lengths from Taramoa, who beat Kaikahu by four .lengths. Double Soult was the only other to finish, Parader having fallen at the top of the straight, and Kulrange at the carriage paddock. Tractarian, who is trained by G. Fielding, has started only three times, his previous efforts being a second at Waimate and a win at Washdyke. He is one of the best recruits from the hunters’ ranks for some time. Three Lengths Win. On Top was made a hot favourite for the Woolston Handicap, but he was nasty at the post and missed the jump out. The investments on the bestbacked candidates were: On Top 2435, Charmeuse 1132 and Desert Song 1094. Blue Paper led a bunched field on to the main course, where the front division included Blue Paper, Charmeuse, Grand Acre, Desert Song, Ex Dono, Golden Pennant and Muff. Charmeuse headed Blue Paper beginning the final furlong, and drew away to. win by three lengths from Desert Song, who caught the tiring Blue Paper near the post and beat her by half a length. Miss Bradbury was two lengths further back, a length in front of Portray. On Top apparently broke a blood vessel during the race, through colliding with Portray. Beaufort Steeplechase. Radiac, who had won three minor steeplechases in succession, was made an even money choice for the Beaufort, 900 chances in better demand than Kapuna, who carried over 300 units more than Matu. Diamond Jack led Snowfall and Airtight to the first fence, but at the Kennels double Snowfall made a bad jump, and Diamond Jack and I adiate went on in the lead. Diamond Jack came to grief at the home turn, leaving Radiate to lead over the stand double with Radiac. the pair being six lengths ahead of Kapuna. Radiac was just in front at Cutts’ but Radiate outjumped him and led into the back from Radiac, Kapuna and Charlatan. Charlatan came down at the post and rails, and at the Kennels double the order was Radiac, Kapuna. Radiate and Matu. Kapuna joined Radiac at the second sod wall, and headed him at the big brush at the home turn. Kapuna ran to the last fence with a nice lead, and the ArOwhenua-owned gelding won convincingly by five lengths from the favourite, who was half a dozen lengths in front o f Matu. Snowfall, who tailed off in the early part, was finishing strongly in fourth place. Radiate fell at the top, but Airtight completed the course. Kapuna was ridden by H. Dulieu, who was on Aurora Borealis in the Grand National. He was meeting Radiac on 321 b better terms than when they ran first and second at the Christchurch Hunt meeting less, than a fortnight ago. Positions Reversed. Paris was made a slightly better favourite than West Dome in the Spreydon Hurdles, the last-named coming in for a surprising* amount of support. West Dome ran the first hurdle down badly and pushed Zippor on to the wing, Tricklebank making a wonderful recovery when his horse tripped. Paris led over the stand fence from Membo, Gay Fashion and Exide. Gay Fashion made a wild * jump and struck, but failed to shift young Robb. Membo jumped into the lead at Cutts’ from Paris, Gay Fashion, Exide and West Dome, and led past the mile from Gay Fashion, Exide and Paris. At the far turn, Membo and Exide were just clear of Paris and Gay Fashion, with Zippor and West Dome handy. Membo led Exide, Gay Fashion and Paris round the home turn, and was still in charge at the last fence. Here he blundered and nearly fell, crossing Paris. Membo was two or three lengths in front of Paris a furlong from home, but the favourite finished the better and Membo struggled home with only half a length to spare. Gay Fashion was ten lengths away, two lengths ahead of West Dome. Membo was ridden by E. Shaw, his previous pilot over hurdles having broken a couple of ribs when Double Soult fell on Tuesday. Gold Mint fell early in the race. An inquiry was held into the incident at the last fence and it was decided to place Paris first and Membo second, but as it was considered that any interference was accidental, no blame was attached to Membo’s rider. Grand National Hurdles. Mangani was always favourite for the Grand National Hurdles. The final figures included Mangani 2386. Carinthia 1816 and Mister Gamp 1296. Pangolin, Aurora Borealis, Carinthia and Mangani were first to move, and Pangolin and Mangani went on from Carinthia, Omeo and Mountain Guide. Pango>.n drew out three lengths at the second hurdle, where Mangani fell heavily. Pangolin led into the straight half a dozen lengths clear of Mountain Guide and Omeo, with Carinthia next. Carinthia jumped into second place opposite the stand, and gained further ground at Cutts’ hurdle, where Pangolin held a lead of three lengths from

Carinthia, Aurora Borealis, Mountain Guide and Omeo. Carinthia jumped alongside Pangolin at the mile, where Aurora Borealis ran into third place as a result of Mountain Guide falling. Carinthia rounded the far turn going easily in front of Aurora Borealis, Llyn Du and King’s Jest, and this order was maintained round the home turn. Carinthia landed over the last fence with the race well in hand, and won easing up by over a length from Aurora Borealis, who was threequarters of a length ahead of King’s Jest. Nukumai was four lengths away, just heading Llyn Du and Omeo on the post. A Good Dividend. Another hot favourite was found in the August Handicap in Nancy Lee, who was backed down to a shade under evens, nearly twice as strongly in demand as Arikinui or Staghunter. There was a breakaway in which Rational 11., Staghunter and Teri went off fast. When a proper start was effected, Rational 11. got much the worst of it. Arrowmir, Arikinui and Staghunter were the early leaders, and they ran to the main course attended by Nancy Lee. Staghunter was in trouble two furlongs from home, where Arrowmir was holding off Arikinui and Nancy Lee. Arrowmir was never actually headed, and won by threequarters of a length from Arikinui, who beat Nancy Lee by over a length. Teri was about two lengths away, just defeating Rational 11. and Staghunter. Arrowmir was not seriously considered by the majority of backers, and his supporters collected a pleasing dividend. High Gear Coming Right. Gray’s mount Adventus was sent out a raging favourite for the Summer Handicap with 3324 tokens, but there was not so much in it for second favouritism between High Gear 1682 and Air Laddie 1521. Night Dew and Dumblane made play from Air Laddie and Hounslow, but at the end of three furlongs the leaders were Dumblane, Semper Paratus and Adventus. Adventus, Semper Paratus and Grattus were in charge at the home turn, but a bit further on Semper Paratus took sole command. Then High Gear shot up on the inside and stayed on to win by over a length from Compris, who finished fast and beat Dumblane by a length for second money. Semper Paratus was fourth, then came Rapina and Hounslow. High Gear showed promising form when he won at Wingatui on Boxing Day, but met with an injury in the race, and had to be spelled. He is just coming right, and may win again soon. Royal Game Again. Full Feather 2204, Town Major 1879, and Blimp 1546, were the popular fancies in the Islington Handicap,, but Tourist, Black Duke and Taboo all were in good demand. Taboo, Starshooter, Royal Opera and Blimp began best, the last to leave being Black Duke, Full Feather and Town Major. At the end of two furlongs, Evening ran to the front from Starshooter, Royal Opera, Blimp and Town Major. Evening led round the top from Royal Opera, Starshooter, Blimp, Royal Game and Town Major, the last two being Tourist and Full Feather. Evening was first into the straight from Starshooter and Royal Opera, but Taboo shot up and took charge two furlongs from home. Then Royal Game raced through on the fence and secured a break on the field and won by half a length from Town Major, who finished very fast two lengths ahead of Starshooter. Black Duke, Taboo and Evening were next. Royal Game won the same race last year. On each occasion he w' bracketed with Black Mint, who was c-j more fancied of the pair. HANDICAPS FOR THIRD DAY.
