WAIMATE.

GOLF CLUB. The following will represent the Waimate Golf Club in a match to be played at Oamaru against the North Otago Club on Thursday next:—E. W. Travers. T. A. Wilson. D. Borrie, A. Sawell, A. T. J. Shaw. B. O’Hara. S. Grut. D. Stewart. H. C. Foster, Canon Cocks. Any of the above players unable to make the trip are requested to advise the secretary at once. SCHOOLS AT PLAY. Return Rugby and basketball matches between the Waimate and Pareora schools were layed in Waimate on Saturday. Pareora won the Rugby by 10 points to 8 after a keen game, while the basketball match ended in a draw, nine all. The match was very even. Pareora showing much better form than in the previous game. Mr P. Shroeder refereed the football and Miss U. Callaghan the basketball. KNOX CHURCH. There was a large congregation at Knox Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening, when the monthly choral service was held. The choir, under the conductorship of Mr H. C. Foster, sang the anthems, “And the Glory,” and “Worthy is the Lamb,” from the “Messiah.” A duet from Stainers’ Crucifixion was rendered by Messrs H. C. Foster, and A. Sawell. The preacher was the Rev. W. F. Nichol. who commenced a series of addresses on “Ancient Men with their Modern Message.” A RUNAWAY. Some excitement was caused in Waimate on Monday afternoon by a runaway in Queen Street. A horse and trap, which had apparently been left unattended for a while, bolted, finally colliding with a milk lorry. Fortunately no one was hurt. A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the Committee of the Waimate A. and P. Association was held on Saturday. Present—Messrs A. W. Barnett (president), E. C. Studholme, J. T. Hay ( F. Brown, M. L. Elliott, J. C. Faulkner, J. C. Hay, W. Hayman, J. I. Hayman, E. B. Harrison, J. H. Milne, M. Mcßae, Jack Mcßae. D. Macdonald. H. Ruddenklau, N. Rattray, R. Sinclair. Before proceeding with general business the chairman referred to the great loss the Dominion had sustained through the death of the late Sir Joseph Ward and Sir Robert Stout, two great statesmen, whose names would always be remembered and entwined in the history of the Dominion. He moved votes of sympathy with the relatives of the deceased, the motion being carried in silence. The chairman also moved that a letter of sympathy and condolence be forwarded to McKerchar Bros., upon the decease of their father. This also was carried, members standing. Correspondence. The Studholme Junction Saleyards Co., forwarded a reply to letter sent to them in March last, regarding weeds in yards, stating that every effort would be made to keep them down.—Received. The Otago A. and P. Society forwarded a copy of report of conference of delegates held in Dunedin on June 6.—Received. The following Associations sent notice of dates of shows: Leeston, 16th October; Timaru, 29th and 30th October; Rangiora, 7th November; Oamaru, 20th and 21st November; Dunedin, 25th and 26th November; Wyndham, sth December; Feilding, 3rd and 4th February, 1931; Christchurch Horse Parade, Ist October.— Received.

Messrs Wright Stephenson and Co., Timaru, wrote advising that Dr. Annet Director of Agricultural Science, and Mr Halford, representative for the Imperial Chemical Industries, were desirous of lecturing to farmers in Waimate on Tuesday night, August 19th, and inquiring if a meeting could be arranged in a hall with electric light. Resolved that the Association’s rooms be made available, the lecturers to do their own advertising. The Tariff Protection Committee wrote regarding the protection of the grain grower against the threatened removal of duty from stock foods. It was moved by H. Ruddenklau and seconded by E. C. Studholme, “That a letter be sent to the Member for the district, requesting him to use his best endeavours to oppose the removal of duty on wheat and other classes of grain, and that a copy of the resolution be sent to the Prime Minister.” — Carried. The chairman gave a brief report of the business transacted at the recent conference of delegates held in Wellington. On the motion of Mr D. MacDonald and R. Sinclair he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for attending the conference and for his report. The chairman read the report of the ground committee and representations from the wool management committee regarding work to be carried out on the show ground. The recommendations of the ground committee were agreed to. and a vote of thanks was accorded Mr E. J. Meredith for gift of two seats for the cattle ring. It was decided that a divisional fence through the accommodation yards, up to the railway line fence, be erected, to form a parking place for cars. The president reported that the wool classes committee had offered £32 toward the cost of a race towards the loading bank. —Offer accepted with thanks. A sub-committee was appointed to have the work carried out, and the new fence erected, and to take necessary action regarding the wash-out in the river bank. The question of holding a horse parade was left in the hands of the horse classes sub-committee. Judges were selected for the Clydesdale classes. Resolved that the wool classing competition, similar to last year's, be included in the schedule. It was agreed that a member’s ticket should admit a member, his wife and children under 16 years of age.
