HELD FOR RANSOM.

PLIGHT OF MISSIONARIES IN CHINA.

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received August 6, 7.5 p.m.) LONDON, August 5.

“It is impossible for the Church Missionary Society to pay the ransoms the Chinese bandits demand,” said the Rev. W. Cash, secretary of the Society, referring to the bandits’ cutting off of the fingers of Dr. Nettleton. “If we began to pay up, probably one hundred missionaries would be captured within a week.”

A Foreign Office official says: “We have already made numerous appeals to the local authorities for troops to rescue Miss Nettleton and Miss Harrison. Further urgent representations for swift action and the securing of immediate release are being taken.”
