Mr and Mrs T. W. Lynch, Church Street, have returned from the south. Miss Betty Sutton, Oamaru, has left for Christchurch, where she is the guest of Mrs H. J. Beadel, for the races. Miss Jill Barker, Hawke’s Bay, is the guest of Miss Marion Giles, Christchurch. Mrs James Innes, Haldon Station, who has been spending a few days in Christchurch, has returned home. The Misses Wood, Waimate, are the guests of Mrs H. O. Macfarlane, Dunedin. Mrs F. Burns, The Bungalow, Wai-iti Road, has returned from a visit to Geraldine. Miss Ruth Barker, Rocky Ridges, Geraldine, is staying with Mrs W. H. Walton, Park Lane. Mrs A. A. Scott, Bidwill Street, who has been visiting Invercargill, left yesterday for Hawke’s Bay. Miss J. Turnbull, Christchurch, who has been staying with Miss Wright, Wai-iti Road, left on Tuesday, to stay with Miss Nora Lysaght, Geraldine. Miss Cecil Elworthy and Mr Harold Elworthy, Craigmore, will be the guests of Miss Phyllis Francis for the races in Christchurch next week. Mr and Mrs Arthur Grigg, Surrey Hills, Mayfield, will be the guests of Mrs J. Cracroft-Wilson for the races next week. Miss Alice Pascoe, Christchurch, who has been staying with Miss June Batchelor, Dunedin, will return home today. Miss Batchelor will be her guest for National week. A meeting of women, held in the Town Hall, Wellington, on Saturday afternoon, strongly protested against the exclusion of wage-earning women from the benefits of the Unemployment Bill. When Miss Diana Fishwick, the eighteen-year-old player, recently won the British Ladies’ Championship, Sir Thomas Wilford sent her congratulations on behalf of the golfers of New Zealand. Sir Thomas has sent out Miss Fishwick’s acknowledgment to the secretary of the New Zealand Golf Association. An enjoyable children’s party was held on Saturday at the residence of Mr and Mrs J. F. Fowler, on the occasion of the fifth birthday of their daughter Irene. The afternoon was spent in the playing of all kinds of indoor nursery games. The distribution of paper hats, balloons, and Surprise packets caused much excitement among the children. In the dining room, artistically decorated, tea was served, the birthday cake being cut by the small guest of honour. ORARI BRIDGE BALL. The ball given by residents of Orari Bridge on Friday evening was an unqualified success. The hall was prettily decorated with blue and white streamers, evergreens, and paper flowers, and formed a fitting background for the beautiful frocks worn. Splendid music was supplied by a Timaru orchestra, and Mr W. Seeler controlled the floor. A lucky spot waltz was won by Miss Thomson, Timaru, and Mr Buckley, Geraldine. Extras were played by Mrs J. Charles and Mr J. Callanan. Visitors were present from Timaru, Temuka, Geraldine, Orari, Woodbury, Peel Forest and other districts. Dancing was kept up until the early hours of the morning.
