And— R. L. ORBELL & SINCLAIRTHOMSON, LTD., TIMARU. pYNE, GOULD, GUINNESS, LTD. NATIONAL DOUBLE MARKET. ADDINGTON SALE REPORT. WEDNESDAY, 6th AUGUST, 1930. The Grand National double market opened in most inclement weather, in fact it is thought to have been one of the worst days in the memory of the old hands at Addington., Both the store sheep and fat sheep entry were affected by the weather, quite a number of store sheep. and several consignments of fat sheep failing to come forward. STORE SHEEP —There was a very Nondescript yarding, comprising mostly old ewes in lamb. Practically nothing was sold at auction bar a few odd lots, but a few lines were disposed of privately afterwards. However, the majority of the sheep were passed, as there were practically no farmers in attendance when the sale was held. SPRING LAMBS—There was a yarding of 31 spring lambs, and with the exception of one line they were of very indifferent quality. Top price for the day was 34/4, and they quickly dropped down to 21/4. The price per lb would be a little over 1/-. FAT LAMBS—The yarding of fat lambs consisted of 747, against 181 last week. The quality of the yarding on the whole was very good, and it sold at about last week’s rates. Top price for the day was 33/4, and there were pens of lambs at over 30/-, and quite a number at from 28/- to 30/-. FAT SHEEP—There was a slightly smaller yarding of fat sheep than last week, consisting in the main of good prime drafts from various farmers. There were a few North Island sheep of exceptional quality, and these all sold well. Top price for the day was secured by ourselves for Mr George Thompson, of Racecourse Hill, who sold Corriedale wethers at £4/5/- per head. The same owner topped the market last year, w’ith wethers at £4/6/-. We also topped the market for ewes on account of Mr F. Sumner .(Ashburton) at 25 10. We quote:—On A/c. of Mr J. W. Withell (Ealing), 54 ewes at 19 - to 23/-; A/c. Mr T. H. Ivey (Saltwater Creek, Timaru), 98 ewes at 21/7 to 24/-; A/c. Mr Miles Metcalf (Rangitata), 25 ew'es at 15/4 ' to 18/1, 42 lambs at 18/7 to 22/7; A/c. j Mr W. Moore (Waitohi), 112 wethers : at 25/10 to 31/10. FAT CATTLE—The fat cattle entry for the Grand National double market consisted of 555 head, being only five more than the previous w r eek. The quality of the yarding on the whole was very good, some exceptional lines of cattle coming forward from the West Coast, North Island and Southland. If it had not been for the entries of cattle from oth?r provinces, the yarding would have been very small indeed. The sale opened at about £1 to £2 (according to quality) above last week's rates, and continued so until w'ell on. It eased a little over the finishing stages, but was always above last week. We quote per 1001 b: Extra prime steer beef to 48/-, prime steer and heifer beef 42/- to 46/6, ordinary and unfinished steer and heifer beef 36/6 to 40/-, heavy weight steer beef 38/6 to 42/6; best prime quality cow beef 41/6, second grade cow beef 35/6 to 37/6, rough 26/- to 33/-. Our yarding consisted of 120 head, of which the principal sales were as follows:—A/c. Mr T. A. Duncan (Otairi, Palmerston North), 18 steers at £2l/2/6 to £26/5/-; A/c. Mr E. V. Somers (Glen Oroua, Palmerston North), 1 steer at £26, 5/-; A/c. North Island client, 21 steers at £l2 to £l7/12, 6; A/c. South Canterbury client 8 heifers at £lO/2/6 to £l2/17/6; A/c! Mrs A. P. Bell (Stirling), 1 bullock at £3l; A/c. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes (Otahuna, Tai Tapu), 14 Red Polled steers at £lB 2/6 to £l9/17/6; A/c. Mr Alex. Gillanders (Domett), 4 steers at £23 to £29. 1 heifer at £l7/12/6. FIGS Pork was a small yarding, and pi ices took a sharp rise. In bacon there w'as a small entry, and a very dragging sale. Stores were an exceedingly small entry, with no buyers. Unique by name and unique in quality. Nothing can equal the Unique hot water bottle for warmth and long service. All sizea. (10)
