CHALLENGE TO BISHOPS.

BY BRITISH CLERGY. An open letter appealing for tolerance and signed by more than 1100 Anglo-Catholic clergy has been presented to the archbishops and bishops of the Church of England, says a London paper. “Why,” the letter asks, “must the Church for ever strangle her devoted sons, or strive to drive them from her arms, unless she can squeeze them into a mould in which they cannot live and thrive?” Other points of the letter are: “Modernists are permitted to deny and belittle the Creeds and even Holy Scripture, but they are seldom reproached by the bishops for disloyalty “The thing that grieves us most is the fact that in our part of Christ’s Church our bishops have ceased to’be our teachers. Thoughtful people are asking what the Church of England does stand for—in so far as definite teaching is concerned—and are seeking definiteness elsewhere. “We have the right* to demand that you set your own house in order first. The present chaos in the realm of worship is the inevitable result of the chaos in the realm of faith.”
