CASUALTIES.
ACCIDENTAL DEATH. By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, July 21. When crossing the railway lines near Linwood Station on the evening of June 27, William Henry Irwin (40), an engine driver, was struck by an electric train and killed. At an inquest to-day, evidence was given that there was no thoroughfare across the tracks at the point where Irwin was struck. The Coroner found that death was due to injuries through being accidentally struck by an electric train. LORRY HIT BY TRAIN. By Telegraph—Press Association PALMERSTON N., July 21. A goods and passenger train from Wanganui, at 9.45 a.m. struck a coal lorry, driven by Cecil Thomas. The driver had a miraculous escape, crawling from the cab of the lorry when it was case aside by the engine. The lorry was extensively damaged, but the driver escaped with hardly a scratch. CHILD KILLED. By Telegraph-Press Association ROTORUA, July 21. A fatal accident occurred on Saturday evening on the Rotorua-Taupo road, when a lorry went over a steep bank seven miles out. The circumstances were peculiar. The lorry stuck in loose ground two miles from the scene of the accident, and was towed to safety by a car, driven by Mr Edgar Bellworthy. The light of the lorry failed, and the driver followed the Bellworthy’s car for two miles. Mr Bellworthy, hearing a crash, stopped, and found that the lorry had disappeared over a 100 foot bank, and obtained assistance from the P.WD. construction camp. The driver, Kora Wharekawa, was found uninjured. A child named Manipoto Tukoreka, son of Rewi Manipoto, of Whakarewarewa, was dead. The body was brought to Rotorua, where an inquest will be held. DEATH UNDER ANAESTHETIC. By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN. July 21. At the inquest on Emily Fannie Callaghan, the Coroner found that death was due to heart failure, the result of an anaesthetic, properly administered for an operation duly performed.
