UNITED STATES DEFEATS ITALY. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright PARIS, July 20. In the Davis Cup inter-zone final. United States defeated Italy by four matches to one, and will now meet France in the challenge round for the trophy on July 25, 26, 27. Results:— G. M. Lott (U.S.A.) defeated Stefani (Italy), 6-3, 6-1, 6-3. De Morpurgo (Italy) defeated W. Allison (U.SJU, 7-5, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. In the doubles, Allison and van Ryn defeated de Morpurgo and Gaslini, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. 1-6, 6-3. The first day’s singles resulted:— Allison defeated Stefani n five sets, and Lott defeated de Morpurgo in four sets. Last year, in the final, France beat America by three matches to two. Cochet beat Tilden and Lott. Borotra lost to Tilden, but beat Lott. In the doubles, Borotra &nd Cochet lost to van Ryn and Allison. France have held the Davis Cup since 1927, when they beat America. Prior to that the United States of America held it for seven consecutive years.
