CRIME WAVE IN AUSTRALIA.

Rich Rewards Reaped

PREVAILING DEPRESSION BLAMED. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received July 21, 11.30 p.m.) SYDNEY. July 21. The prevailing depression in Australia has led to a wave of desperate crime, mainly in the eastern States. Bandits, footpads, and burglars are reaping rich rewards. There have been several armed robberies lately, without a single arrest. The police have their hands very full. Still another robbery occurred today. A girl cashier, employed at the Coogee Motor Omnibus Company, was brutally punched and relieved of £IOO by two thieves, who escaped. An elaborate attempt during the week-end to raid the bank at Cronulla nearly succeeded, when the burglars were disturbed and £2OOO was left behind.
