STIPENDS OF CLERGY.

PROMPTER PAYMENT DESIRED. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 2. The problem of how the stipends of clergy might be paid punctually, occupied the attention of the Wellington diocesan synod. The subject was introduced by Mr J. W. Henderson, who moved that the following motion passed last year should be rescind ..d: “That the Standing Committee be instructed to hold in reserve in the General Church Fund sum by means of which stipends of the clergy can be paid punctually.” In a general discussion, Mr G. Shirtcliff e said that the only way in which this could be done was to set aside a certain sum as a special fund, but even if this were done it would be almost certain that the fund would be exhausted within a few years. It was pointed out that stipends of clergy had been paid as punctually as possible in the past, and that this policy would continue, but it was unreasonable to expect the general fund to accomplish the impossible. Rev. N. S. Barnett pointed out that clergymen a-rriving in the Dominion from England, had complained that it was extremely difficult for them to carry on when stipends were some months overdue. The motion to rescind the 1929 resolution was carried.
