VACANT MAORI SEAT.
AN ANOMALOUS POSITION. By Telegraph—Preti* -i-MocioAUm. WELLINGTON, July 1. With the death in California of Sir Maui Fomare, an unusual position has arisen, one for which no provision is made in the Electoral Act. It is laid down that registration of the death of any Member of Parliament shall be reported within twelve hours to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, but there is no legal provision for initial steps to fill a vacancy caused by a member dying outsiue New Zealand. The death of Sir Maui provides a case that is without precedent in New Zealand, for no member of Parliament has died in similar circumstances. It Is not likely that the bye-election to fill the vacancy caused by Sir Maui’s death will take place for some considerable time. If the body is to be returned to New Zealand, it can be assumed that no action will be taken until then, but srfould the burial take place abroad, the difficulty would have to be surmounted by accepting the notification of death from some responsible authority in California.
