PETROL STATION BURNED.

OWNER ESCAPES NARROWLY. By xolegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, June 20. When escaping from a fire at a service station at Khandallah, early this morning, J. Travis, one of the proprietors, was overcome by heavy smoke, and had to be carried to safety by his partner, H. B. Powell. The two men were sleeping above the station, when a fire broke out. Shortly after 3 o’clock, Powell awakened Travis, and the men had to break a window to escape. Travis collapsed making his way out, and Powell, although himself affected by the smoke and fumes, dragged him clear. The fire damaged a stock of new tyres, oil and machinery. The building was insured for £3OO, and the stock in trade for £2OO.

The cause of the fire is though to be a short-circuiting ignition on a motor car.
