WAIMATE.
THE WEATHER. An exceptionally heavy frost was experienced in Waimate on Thursday night, the most severe this winter so far, 17 h degrees of frost being registered. Several pipes were frozen, and some households had difficulty in obtaining sufficient water for domestic purposes. FRIENDLY SOCIETIES. The regular meeting of the Court Foresters’ Pride, A.0.F., was held on Tuesday night. In the absence of the Chief Ranger, Bro. V. I. Mills S.C.R., presided over a fair attendance of members. The sick visitors, Bro. W. Welch, and W. E. Bayne, reported on visiting sick brethren. There are at present eight brethren on the funds, two having declared on since last meeting. A candidate was admitted and duly initiated by Bro. Mills, S.C.R. Bro. W. F. George, P.D.C.R. reported on a meeting of the Dispensary Board stating that the business was running very smoothly. Arrangements were discussed concerning the annual ball, and it was agreed that the sub-committee meet to make final arrangements. The accounts of the evening were passed for payment. Members then partook of supper, and spent a pleasant hour in card playing.
PERSONAL.
Mr Munro, member for the Ahuiriri riding, Mr Cuthbertson, engineer, and Mr Gardner, County Clerk, for the Waitaki County Council, passed through Waimate on Friday on their way to attend the conference being held in Timaru concerning the allocation of heavy license traffic fees. Mr Black, Waimate County engineer, met the party on arrival and spent some time with them during their stay. Mr R. L. Banks, late engineer for the Mackenzie County Council, accompanied the party. BASKETBALL. Following were the results of the basketball played in Victoria Park. A Grade. In the Willowbridge v. High School No. 2 match, Willowbridge proved victorious by 16 points to 13. High School No. 1 won against Konini by 16 points to 10. St. Patrick’s v. Waimate No. 2:— St. Patrick’s proved winners by 13 points to 11. B Grade. St. Patrick’s team scored a victory over Waimate by 12 points to 6. C Grade. High School No. 1 beat Convent by 17 points to 7. On Wednesday at the school grounds Primary No. 2 scored a victory over High School No. 2 with 18 points to 13. GOLF. The following is the result of the match against the Timaru Ladies’ Club at Timaru on Wednesday (Timaru names first): —Miss Pringle 0 lost to Mrs Templer 1; Mrs Scott 1 beat Miss Hertslet 0; Miss Cllssold 1 beat Mrs O’Callaghan 0; Mrs Minifie 0 lost to Mrs Borrie 1; Miss Sheldon 0 lost to Mrs Hertslet 1; Mrs Finch 1 beat Mrs Fraser 0; Miss Grant 1 beat Miss Eaden 0; Miss Manchester 1 beat Miss Akhurst 0; Miss Meehan 1 beat Mrs Shackleton 0; Miss Creemer 1 beat Mrs Leslie 0. Totals —Timaru 7, Waimate 3. Foursomes —Miss Pringle and Mrs Scott 1 beat Mrs Templer and Miss Hertslett 0; Mrs Finch and Miss Clissold halved with M rs Hertslet and Mrs O’Callaghan; Miss Sheldon and Mrs Minifie 1 beat Mrs Borrie and Fraser 0; Misses Grant and Manchester 1 beat Mrs Shackleton and Miss Eaden Q; Misses Meehan and Creemer 1 beat Mrs Leslie and Miss Akhurst 0.
