In connection with the bank notes fraud, the brothers Antonio and Jose Sandeira, also Reis and the SwissGerman Hennies, were sentenced to terms ranging from eight to twentyfive years. Senorita Reis received ten months’ gaol. The evidence showed that accused forged the signatures of the directors of the Bank of Portugal, and obtained a supply of genuine notes from the printers. in England. These were smuggled into Portugal in diplomatic bags, with Antonio’s assistance. The conspirators then established the Banc Dangola and tried to buy up shares in the Bank of Portugal, and obtain control, so as to hide traces of their swindle. Angola’s plentitude of money in 1925, when others were impoverished, aroused suspicions which unmasked the fraud.
