TWO MEN AND A GIRL. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND. June 2. A few days after William Porter and Leslie Charles Burke, both labourers, and both aged 22, and a girl, described as a music teacher, arrived in Auckland. they were arrested by Auckland detectives. The men were charged with breaking and entering the shop of Victor Pulley, at Rangiora. on May 15, and committing theft. The girl was arrested on a charge of vagrancy. This morning, when Porter and Burke appeared at the Police Court, further charges of issuing valueless cheques at Wellington and Palmerston North were brought against them. Porter was further charged with unlawfully converting to his own use a motor car valued at £2OO. Senior-Detective Hammond obtained j a remand to Christchurch on June 5 on the charge of breaking and entering and theft at Rangiora. ‘ Both these young men are implicated in burglary there,” he said. “They got in touch with the young girl in the South Island, and came north. They issued three valueless cheques in Wellington, and obtained money and goods. Porter took the motor car in Wellington, and they all drove to Palmerston North, where they I obtained more money by a valueless cheque for £l2. which they got a jeweller to cash. They then booked three seats in a service car to New Plymouth, paying for their rides with another valueles cheque. They then came to Auckland, where they were all arrested.” Each was sentenced to six months* imprisonment, to be followed by reformative detention for twelve months. ARAB FIREMEN IN COURT. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 2. Yesterday afternoon a stabbing i affray occurred at Chelsea, when an , Arab fireman, on the steamer livington Court (.which arrived that morning from Cuba, with sugar), received three knife wounds in the face and neck. This morning at the Police Court. Yahia Ahmid (28). another Arab fireman, was remanded till June 7. on a charge of causing actual bodily harm.
