WAIMATE.

RUGBY FOOTBALL. Dry weather prevailed yesterday, but a high wind across the ground confined practically all of the play to one side of the field, the ball seldom reaching the grandstand side. Play was of a scrambling order, due largely to the wind, which blew the ball out time and again, causing a large number of line-outs. The senior game Old Boys v. Marlst resulted in a win for the former by 10 points to three —two unconverted trie~ and a potted goal, to a converted penalty kick. L. Foley, for Marists, played a sterling forward game, likewise Carlton, for Old Boys in the back division. The Play. Marist won the toss. Sterling kicked off for Old Boys, Hansen received the kick, which was returned by Boyd (Old Boys), who kicked out near the Greens’ corner. From the line-out the ball went out at half-way. After a series"Of scrums and line-outs, Patterson returned the leather to Old Boy’s 25. Shortly afterwards Old Boys broke away, and' carried play to the Green line, where one of their players forced. From the kick-off bad passing by Old Boys let Marists away, and they pressed for sometime. A kick-off after a force went out at the Old Boys 25 where Wyndham relieved with a good kick. Shortly afterwards Boyd (Old Boys) was penalised for off-side, and Patterson (Marist) kicked a beautiful gaol. Quarter time sounded shortly after with the score: Marist 3, Old Boys 0. On changing over, give and take play followed until Marist were penalised for off-side, Carlton kicking out at halfway. For breach of play, Marist were awarded a free kick, Blackaby (Marist) finding the line at half-way. Exchange !of kicks ended in Old Boys’ favour. From the throw in. Foley (Marist), broke away and carried play to halfway. For some considerable time play was confined to midway, Moffitt (Old Boys), eventually securing and kicking the leather out at Marist 25. Good forward play by Marist relieved the position. Old Boys pressed, but a force resulted. From the scrum, a Green player was penalised for off-side, Hodges taking the kick at goal which failed. Half-time sounded shortly afterwards with the score unaltered. Marist 3, Old Boys 0.

On resuming for the third quarter, the kick off went out at Marist 25. Give and take play followed until Carlton secured and found the line inside the Marist 25. The Greens were penalised for off-side, and Carlton found the line at the corner. From the line-out Pearse (Old Boys) secured and dived over. The kick by Hodges from a difficult angle failed. Marist 3, Old Boys 3. The kick-off was returned by Carlton to the Greens' 25. McKinnon from the line-out secured for Marist, and put in a good run. but off-side spoilt a good movement. Carlton secured and returned play to Marist side of half-way. E. O’Neill secured and broke through to Old Boys’ 25. Time for the third quarter sounded with the score unaltered. Marist 3, Old Boys 3.

On resumption, Bartlett kicked off for Green, the kick being returned by Carlton to Marist 25. A scrum was ordered on the Marist line, the forwards relieving with a dribbling rush to half-way. After the line-out Carlton secured a mark and kicked the ball, which went over the dead-ball line. Blackaby was caught in possession after the kick-off, the leather eventually going out in Marist 25. After further play S. Walker secured for Old Boys and took the ball after a good run to Marist 25. After give and take play Patterson saved the position for Marist by a good kick to half-way. From the line-out Patterson marked the .kick from Carlton, and took play to Old Boys’ 25. Old Boys returned to Marist territory pressing for some time. From a line-out Blackaby headed a good rush to half-way. Dobbs shortly afterwards secured near half-way. and with a good.

run scored a brilliant try. The kick at goal fell short. Time was sounded with the ball in play, but Carlton secured and potted a goal making the final score:—Old Boys 10, Marist 3. Mr D. Dench was referee. COUNTY COUNCIL. At the monthly meeting of the Waimate County Council, the following matters were discussed:—. Power Board Poles. Regarding the transmission poles at Dempsey’s corner, Councillor Lindsay said he had met the Power Board's engineer, who claimed that the Council should pay the cost of removal, contending that the poles had been in position for several years. In reference to poles being too close to the formation in other parts of the district, the engineer said that there was no danger, but the speaker entirely disagreed with this view, and maintained that the poles should be shifted. The chairman stated that the whole position was far from satisfactory, and it .would probably be best to wait and see what could be done in the matter later on.—This course Wjas agreed to. Hospital Rates. Councillor Woodhouse, speaking on the question of remits to the Counties Conference, said he thought that the hospital rates were inequitable, as residents in country districts in many cases paid treble the amount that borough residents were called upon to pay. He said that he did not approve of the 50-50 basis suggested by Councillors Whatman and Lindsay, but would move that the following remit be sent forward: "That in this Council’s

opinion the charitable aid and hospital levies be charged on a population basis.” Councillor Rattray seconded the motion. Councillor Whatman moved as an amendment that the County’s remit should be: “That the levies be struck on the basis that half the levies be made on capital value, and half on population basis.” The amendment failed to find a seconder, and the motion was carried. The County Clerk then supplied par- . ticulars of the amounts contributed by i the local authorities of South Canter - ’ bury, and also an analysis showing the . cost per head of population of the levy for the years 1930-31 shown as follows: , Timaru Borough Council, population > 15835 —5/8 per head; Temuka Borough i Council, population 1890—3/7 per head; !
