ST. ANDREWS.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE. A special meeting of St. Andrews School Committee was held on Saturday afternoon. After the meeting an adjournment was made to the school grounds to make an inspection. It was found that the grounds were in very bad order, and it was decided to get to work with cutting trees, etc., and generally tidying up. The Committee decided to organise functions during the winter for school funds. The first of these functions took the form of a euchre party on Saturday evening, when 10 tables were occupied fpr cards. Prizes, which were donated by Mr and Mrs Cecil Hoskin, were won by the following:—Ladles, first, Mrs A. H. Dellow; consolation, Mrs E. Hatton. Men, first, Mr D. Stowell; consolation, Mr H. O’Neill. SOCIAL AND PRESENTATION. The Esk Valley School was crowded on Friday evening, when about 150 residents met to say farewell to Mr T. Hartnett, who is leaving to take up farming in the Rangitata Valley. The chair was occupied by Mr A. M. Copland, who expressed the sincere regret of all at the departure of Mr Hartnett, who had always so willingly helped in anything for the welfare of Mr Copland then called upon Mrs J. Long to make a presentation. Mrs Long asked Mr Hartnett to accept a gold watch and chain, and a wallet of notes, from his friends at Esk Valley, at the same time wishing him success and prosperity in his new venture. Mr E. Hatton and Mr A. Gordon also Mr Hartnett thanked everyone for their handsome gifts and expressions of goodwill. He regretted leaving Esk Valley where he had made so many friends. The remainder of the evening was spent in dancing, music being supplied by Mr R. Gordon (concertina), and Mr L. R. Bishop (piano), and extras being played by Mrs Jones and Mr Gordon. The duties of M.C. were in the hands of Mr J. Hart. TENNIS CLUB. The St. Andrews Tennis Club held a successful euchre party in the Library Hall on Monday evening, when 40 persons indulged in card playing. Prizes donated by Mr R. L. Pugh were won by the following:—Ladies, first. Mrs J. D. McCurdy; consolation. Miss F. McCurdy. Men, first, Mr C. Smith; consolation, Mr W. Carpenter. Mr J. McCurdy (chairman of the Committee), expressed pleasure at seeing so many present and stated that it was the Club's intention to put the court in good playing order this season. Amongst those present were:—Mesdames Lyall, Higginson. McCurdy, Dellow, King, O’Loughlin, Shea, Luscombe i 2), Misses Kane, O’Loughlin (4), Winchester, Payne, Greelish, McCurdy, Dellow, Messrs McCurdy, King, Higginson. Pugh, Carpenter, Smith (2), Payne, Green, Ibell, Vivian, Churton, O'Loughlin (2), Galletly (2), Palmer, Lyall, McMaster.
