NORMAL KILLING RESUMED.
NO FURTHER INTERRUPTIONS. PROMISE BY SLAUGHTERMEN. Yesterday a brighter tone prevailed in regard to the freezing works trouble in South Canterbury, and the companies, following a statement made by the men that there would be no further interruptions, are hopeful that normal conditions will prevail for the remainder of the season. The first interruption in this district occurred a week ago last Monday, and since that date the slaughtering of stock has been spasmodic. Numerous meetings were held by the men, work being resumed for comparatively short periods at rates varying from “go slow’* to normal. The freezing companies and the farmers have had a very anxious time, for with a general shortage of feed, and stock fattening off rapidly, it was essential that the works should be kept going at full speed. The Easter holidays will cause another set-back, for next week there will only be three full days’ killing. When the slaughtermen resumed at Pareora at 8 o’clock yesterday morning, they killed at the rate of eight sheep per man per hour, up till 10 o’clock. A meeting was then held, and this lasted until 11 o’clock, when normal killing was resumed. A further meeting was held after lunch, and this lasted until approximately 3 o’clock. The men then informed the management that there would be no further interruptions, and normal killing was again resumed after “smoke oh.” At the Smithfield works, a meeting was held from 8 o’clock until 9.15, when normal killing commenced. After lunch a further meeting was held, this lasting until 2.30, when work was again commenced at the normal rate.
