PERSISTENT SLY-GROGGERS. By Telegraph—Press Association. ASHBURTON, April 11. Gideon Scott, charged with selling liquor without a license, was fined £SO. He has a list of previous fines or imprisonments on similar charges as far back as 19J8. His brother, James Oliver Scott, was fined £2O on a similar charge. He also has a long list of previous offences. BEN DEELEY DELICENSED. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND. April 11. Benjamin Kinsman Deeley (50) formerly a well-known ex-jockey was fined £IOO to-day for intoxication while in charge of a car. His license was cancelled for five years. The police stated that it was Deeley’s third offence. VAGRANCY CHARGE. By Telegraph Pres* Association. WELLINGTON. April 11. William Sullivan (49). who was imprisoned for the theft of £IOOO wortn of jewellery on the West Coast in 1910. was sentenced to-day to three months' hard labour for vagrancy. DISCARDED SUITOR THRASHED. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 11. Because be had heard that John old Wood had been speaking in a derogatory way about a girl with whom he had been keeping company, and who had transferred her affections from Wood to him, Noel Alexander Spring-Rice gave Wood a thrashing in the street. Spring-Rice was to-day fined £l. BORSTAL ESCAPEES. By Telegraph—Pres* Assoalatlon. INVERCARGILL. April 11. Four youths, who escaped from the Borstal Institution, were before the. Court. They pleaded guilty and were committed for sentence. Two admitted “converting” a motorcycle and entering a dwelling where they procured food. ACCOUNTANT CHARGED WITH FRAUD. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND. April 11. Arrested in the city this afternoon, Bernard Sidney Spencer, public accountant, of the New Zealand Insurance Building, appeared in the Police Court later to answer a charge of false pretences. The charge was:—“That, on April 2, 1929, accused did obtain from A. A. Corban and Coy. a cheque for £27/8/-, by falsely representing that he did pay the amount for income tax on behalf of the company.” The Magistrate remanded accused to appear next Thursday. It was stated that further charges were pending. Bail was fixed at £looo—self in £SOO, and two sureties of £250 each.
