SCOUTS

By "PATHFINDER.” To celebrate their success in winning the Williams Memeorial Shield, the scouts of St. Mary’s Troop treated themselves to a tea last Friday evening. Two long tables placed end to end were required to support the abundance of tempting food. The Timaru Scouters were invited to partake cf their generosity, and during the evening Mr Palliser spoke of the year’s work, and congratulated St. Mary’s on their win, mentioning that the troop would have to work hard during the coming year on general Scout work and craft. Replying, the Scoutmaster, J. Keen, thanked Mr Palliser for his continued interest in the Troop’s work, and hoped that with the Shield in the foreground, an impetus would be given to the Troop's work, well knowing that the other Timaru Troops would make every endeavour to wrest the honour ircm them by the end of the year. Six new recruits were welcomed by the Scouter.

Scouts who have earned those several Badges, such as Ambulance, which subjects have to be passed each year, will have their opportunity during the month of May. All those who fail will have to take the badges off their sleeves, until they succeed.

In making an investure of Tenderfeet, and Cubs, too great emphasis cannot be laid on the important of the ceremony, and its meaning of the Scout principles, as set out in Scouting for boys. Both the Scoutmaster and his Committee are expected to instruct the candidate on the lav/, the religious principles involved in Lord BadenPowell’s ideal, for here are the beginnings of the sense of religion, honour and loyalty.

All the newly organised hobby clubs of the Highfield Troop are now in full swing. Philately and cycling appears to be the popular hobbies at present. About twenty minutes of the evening’s work is all the time that is devoted to these subjects.

There are now in England's population many more persons over the age of fifty-five than children under the age of five.
