AUTUMN

These days are like an old cat in the sun Drowsily smoothing down its furry sides; Like patch-quilt tortoises the slow hours run, Spreading gold mantles on the steep divides. Noon is the quietude of many boughs That hold the unheard noise of the leaves, And summer’s deeds have followed springtime’s vows Into a happiness where no one grieves. Though some faint evidences here bestow The slight remembrance of forgotten spring, Chameleon shadows of the sunset know The barrenness that other days will bring— And down the sky the arrowed wild geese go To strike the blue of summer’s fleeting wing. —James A. S. McPeek.
