An Irishman was taking an Englishman in a car and showing him the beauty spots of the Free State. The Englishman saw some notices printed in Gaelic and asked his guide what they said. “I don’t know,” replied the Irishman. “But it is your own language!” said the Englishman. “Sure,” said the Irishman, “but, you see, those people who can read can’t speak Gaelic, and those who speak Gaelic can’t read."

While excavating the clay used at a brick kiln at Havelock North one of the workmen unearthed a quantity of bones from a depth of about 30 feet. An opinion was given that the bones belong to the human species, and are possibly those of a young child. It is curious and interesting that such a find should be made so far down in a stratum of thick clay, and the indications are that the relics may be of prehistoric origin. They have been forwarded to Wellington for identification. When the Maunganui was about 50 yards from the Wellington wharf as it was leaving for Sydney. Mr James Bell, a resident of Wellington, who was on his way to Sydney, lost overboard a handbag containing over £IOO. a passport and some valuable papers. The half-yearly meeting of delegates to the South Island Motor Union was held at Christchurch. It was agreed that the Union should share with the North Island Union in the cost of ‘Safety First” posters to be distributed throughout the schools. The Union Steam Ship Company wrote with reference to a request that reduced rates should be given in respect to back freight on motor-cars shipped between Wellington and Picton, stating that the rates charged were below those of the ferry services in other countries. Opinions expressed by members were that the rates were generally too high and the matter was left to the executive to deal with.
