ORARI.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The monthly meeting of the committee of the Orari branch of the Women’s Institute took place on Thursday evening, Mrs G. A. M. Macdonald, the president, presiding. Others present were Mesdames W. Hughes, J. B. Roberts, C. Unwin, S. Unwin, W. E. Cook (secretary), Misses Killok and Grimsey. Arrangements for the annual meeting were made and the annual report and balance sheet was passed by the Committee.

The secretary reported that eighteen nominations had been received for the new committee. Messrs G. A. M. Macdonald and W. E. Cook, were a LgfShted to act as scrutineers. H£ A> as decided to appoint at the next meeting, an entertainment committee to arrange the programme for a birthday party in April. The secretary reported that Miss A. M. Stops, an organiser recently arrived from England, would visit the Orari Institute in April. Miss Martin of Temuka. recently of Wellington had arranged to bring a display of her handcrafts to the next meeting. PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs G. I. Hamilton left Orari on Thursday for Wellington, vdiere they are joining the s.s. Rotorua en route to England. Mr and i/rs Hamilton expect to be absent from New Zealand until December. Mrs J. P. Peter, Orari Road, is the guest of Mrs Wilfred Howell, Ca/o. Miss Barbara Hillary, who is at present staying with Mrs John i ewbegin, Cave, has been appointed to the staff of the Timaru Hospital. Mr A. Southey, Orari railway staff, has returned from a short visit to Dunedin. GENERAL. The play-reading circle formed in Orari is not sufficient to meet the needs of those interested and efforts are being made to form a further circle. For the second circle, already about twelve names have been handed in, and it is expected a meeting will be held early this week. The Orari Hall Commitee are effecting further improvements to the hall, and men are busy laying concrete in front of the hall and over the crossing. This should be a great benefit to users of the hall during the winter months. Miss Isobel Bennett, Befield, is the winner of the £3 members competition at the Orari Horticultural Show. Miss Bennett was one of the competitors in Mr Burnett’s competition .
