FORESTRY RELIEF WORKS.

CLOSING DOWN END OF MARCH. By Telegraph—Pres* Association. WELLINGTON. March 14. The closing down at the end of the current month of the remaining forestry relief work camps, involving the discharge of 440 men, is announced by the Commissioner of State Forests (Hon. W. B. Taverner), who also indicates the possibilities of re-employ-ment when the planting season starts. The Minister states that the majority of relief works in the programme set out in Octooer have been carried to completion, and only two parties remain on works outside the normal seasonal routine. These parties are at Rotorua (340 mem, and at Tapanui (100 men). “The extra funds provided last year by the Government,” says the Minister, “for this forestry work have been £120.000. in addition to the normal appropriations, and an extra complement averaging 700 men has been maintained in employment throughout the summer season, ancl besides contributing so largely towards the relief of unemployment and preparing the way lor a big programme this winter, if required, there has been brought about a great improvement in the existing stands of young exotic trees.’’
