NEWS AND NOTES,

A party of Dunedin people who recently made the trip from Greymouth lo Westport, via the newly-opened coast road, found that it was over 30 miles shorter than the old road, via Reefton and the Lower Buller Gorge. In the opinion of the travellers the new route also provides some of the finest scenic attractions in the Dominion. The Government is to be congratulated. they say, on the way in which the work on the new road has been carried out. The party inet another party of 22 Americans on the Coast road, and the visitors went so far as to state that it was one of the best scenic routes they had ever travelled over.

A member of the British party of farmers remarked that he could not help noticing the amount of face powder used by the girls in New Zealand. Some of them, he said, looked as if they had just finished a shift in a flour mill. “You don’t find our English girls running to seed with face powder like that, but apparently as soon as they get to New Zealand they soon fall into the habits of their adopted country.”

The nutritive value of a remarkable bean known as the soya bean, which grows in Manchuria, was referred to by Dr. W. E. Stevens in the course of an address at New Brighton. He said that so valuable was the soya bean as a food that last year 500,000,000 bushels were grown in Manchuria, and the Manchurian railways which previously had been run at a loss were now paying their way. From the bean it was possible to make milk as good as cow’s milk, and by different processes butter and bread could be produced from the bean, and the plant itself was good as cattle fodder. Doubtless expensive machinery would be required to extract the by-products from the bean, but he believed the time would come when instead of drinking cow’s milk and eating butter made from cow’s milk, people would only eat these foods when produced from the soya bean.

A profusion of the very latest in English, Continental and American autumn and winter modes will be exhibited by Miss M. Barrar, the Bernadette, to-day. Her importations should meet with the appreciation of a discriminating public. Features will be a special line of matrons’ models—the Russian “tammy,” and the American slouch end sou’-wester. Address, opposite Theatre Royal, over Lamborn’s Cycle Shop
