WINCHESTER.

WEATHER REPORT. Mr J. L. White reports from Winchester as follows (the figures in parentheses refer to last year’s records: Rainfall 101 points (15) on 7 days (2); heaviest day’s rain, 50 points on February 15; total for the year to date 878 points (172), on 22 days (15); maximum temperature in the shade 88 degrees (86); absolute minimum 44 degrees (40); average of maxima 72.4 (76.2); average of minima 52.8 (50.7); mean temperature for the month 62.6 (63.4). Anti-cyclone conditions prevailed. Two slight depressions occurred, the first passing on the 15th, the second on the 23rd and 24th.

Mr G. B. Orbell, who has been spending his vacation holidays with hia parents, Mr and Mrs L. H. Orbell, Winchester, returned to the Otago University yesterday. Mr George Waple who is leaving Winchester to take Up a position in the police force was on Thursday afternoon the recipient of a presentation from his fellow employees at the Waihi Wool Works. Mr George Burborough, manager, who presented Mr Waple on behalf of the employees, with a gold wristlet watch, referred to the good fellowship that had existed between Mr Waple and the employees during the two years he had been connected with the firm. He wished him every success in his new sphere of life. Mr R. J. Russell also eulogised Mr Waple’s sterling qualities. Mr Waple briefly returned thanks for their handsome present. Mr Waple who left Winchester for Wellington on Thursday afternoon, will be greatly missed. He was a prominent tennis player and during this season acted as secretary for the Club. He will be missed from the ranks of the Waihi Football Club. He was one of the most promising forwards in South Canterbury, and last season represented the South Canterbury Rugby Union in several representative games.
