TIMARU TROTTING CLUB. BIRTHDAY GIFT TO PRESIDENT. Last evening at the Royal Hotel, the committee and officials of the Timaru Trotting Club were guests of Mr John Hole (president), and Mr H. F. Morton (vice-president), at a dinner on the eve of the Club’s autumn meeting. Also present were Mr J. Beer (stipendiary steward), and Mr W. F. James (totalisator contractor). The toast of the Timaru Trotting Club was proposed by Mr W. F. James, who said that since it attained totalisator status in 1915 the Club had progressed as fast as any Club he knew which did not possess the advantage of a holiday date. He made special reference to the construction of the six-furlong track as a further step on the road to popularity. In responding, Mr Hole, who presided, referred to the strides made by the Club since it started out with stake-money totalling two or three hundreds, and predicted even further increases in this direction. Mr Hole expressed the view that it was his very happy association with the Club which kept him going. He hoped to have many more years of pleasant work 1 with the Club, and made reference to

the happy and excellent relation existing among committeemen and officials. At this stage a surprise was sprung on the chairman by Mr Morton, who announced that the day was the 79th anniversary of Mr Hole’s birthday, and that it had been decided to mark the occasion in a suitable manner. Mr Morton declared that there was no more popular president or more lovable man in New Zealand than Mr Hole, a sentiment that was endorsed heartily by all present. A beautifully decorated birthday cake was then wheeled into' the room, lighted with 79 electric candles, and embellished with horse-shoes, a trotting horse, and other adornments. The cake was cut by the recipient, whose health was then toasted with musical honours. Several speakers offered congratulations to Mr Hole in attaining such a vigorous old age. Mr J. O’Leary referred to the president as a sport and a gentleman who commanded the respect of all sections of the community. Mr W. F. James said that it was solely due to Mr Hole’s geniality that the Club was able to make such favourable terms for the working of the totalisator. He had met many kinds of presidents during his 30 years in the business, but none who was more respected than Mr Hole. Mr A. Anderson expressed the privilege he felt in being present to see such a grand old man receive such a grand present. Messrs C. S. Young, W. Connolly, J. Gilmore and J. Beer also added congratulations and good wishes for many more years of association with the Club.

The secretary, Mr H. H. Fraser, one of Mr Hole’s oldest friends, in offering felicitations on the happy occasion, referred to the eagerness with which people assisted in the preparation and decoration of the cake, those including Messrs Young, Pateman, Griffiths, “Timaru Herald” and Miss Betty Andrews (a grand-daughter of Mr Hole). Mr F. Stocker, the oldest committeeman of the Club, then presented to Mr and Mrs Hole, a set of beautiful crystal ware, to the accompaniment of “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows.” Mr Hole feelingly expressed thanks on behalf- of Mrs Hole and himself for the gifts and the sentiments which accompanied them. He had not been unrewarded for any public service he had been able to render during his life, but the Timaru Trotting Club had been more generous than any other body. He was pleased that the Club had progressed under his presidency, and promised to do all in his power to further its progress in future. The happy function concluded with a flashlight photograph being taken of the company. Nominations for the Oamaru Jockey Club’s autumn meeting on March 22nd and 24th, will close with the secretary at 8 o’clock on Monday night. A correction has been made in the programme for the first day. The words “hack conditions” have been deleted from the sixth race, the Flying Handicap, which is not a hack race.
