MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society was held yesterday. Present.—Messrs T. R. Mackay (chairman), W. G. Aspinall, W. S. Grant, T. Twigg, W. E. Boys, G. G. Rich, G. G. Lewis, C. S. Young and J. Stewart. Correspondence. The secretary of the Central Research Committee advised that his committee were anxious for the various research sub-committees to begin their co-operative work, and that there were four matters in which the committee required assistance now, while further instructions would be sent from time to time. The matters requiring immediate attention were, collection of trout scales, report of all liberations of trout and other fish in South Canterbury district, collection of certain data as to catches of trout and other fish, and the tabulation of local problems. The letter was received, the secretary being instructed to go further into the matter. The secretary of the Auckland Society wrote advising that application had been made to the Minister of Internal Affairs, for permission to import 100 brace of chukor, of which 25 brace would be forwarded to South Canterbury. The Minister (Hon, P. A. de la Perrelle), also wrote authorising the importation into New Zealand of chukor. The birds would be imported subject to certain conditions, details of which were set out in the letter. The letter was received, members expressing pleasure at the information contained. The clerk to the Mackenzie County Council wrote inviting a committee from the Society to meet the Mackenzie County Council at Tekapo on March 14. The writer stated that, in conjunction with Mr T. D. Burnett M.P m the Mackenzie County Council were investigating a suggested proposal to set aside a few hundred acres of land at Lake Alexandrina as a domain, under the control of a Domain Board. It was desired to ascertain the best site for such a domain, and a site which would meet the requirements of the Acclimatisation Society. The chairman said he would like to see two reserves; one on either side. A large number of people travelled on this side of the lake. The property on the near side belong to Mr HunterWeston. Mr Young said that they could not do much before the conference. The Society concurred in this view, and Messrs J. McDonald, E. McDonald, G. G. Lewis and Mr HunterWeston -were appointed to represent the Society in the conference with the Mackenzie County Council. General. The chairman said that since last meeting the acting-ranger (Mr Oliver), had found two men on Opihi reserve spearing trout. The men were in possession of spears, and three speared trout were found. “I understand the men were licensed fishermen,” said Mr Mackay. Mr Lewis: “Mr Oliver should be congratulated on his catch.” The Society decided to place the matter in a solicitor’s hands, to enable legal proceedings to be taken. Accounts amounting to £9/9/7 were passed for payment.
