GARDEN PARTY. Members of the W.C.T.U. held a very enjoyable garden party at the residence of Mrs E. Blackmore “St. Leonards,” Temuka, yesterday afternoon. The weather was dull and threatening, but rain which had commenced to fall early in the morning ceased just before noon. The attendance was not quite so large as in former years, but the financial return was considered very satisfactory. A work and produce stall was under the supervision of Mrs Tilbrook and Mrs Buck, and the sweets stall was in charge of Miss I. Hewson and Miss L. Radford. Afternoon tea arrangements were carried out by the W.C.T.U. ladies, who also assisted at the other stalls when necessary. Mrs A. Blakemore, president of the local branch of the W.C.T.U., extended a welcome to all present, and expressed the hope that they would have a happy time. On behalf of the branch, she thanked Mrs Blackmore for again placing her house and grounds at the disposal of the members. Mrs Blakemore also referred to the kindness of the many friends who donated the goods for the stalls and went on to speak of the aims and objects of the W.C.T.U. She was pleased to see the Rev. H. R. Fell and Mrs Fell amongst the visitors. During the afternoon, Miss L. Radford and Mrs Fell contributed vocal solos, which were heartily applauded, and the Rev. H. R. Fell gave a very interesting address.

BOWLING. Mr T. Edwards will represent the Temuka Club in the South Canterbury singles bowling championship to be played at Timaru to-morrow. PERSONAL. Mr George Waple, of Winchester, left Temuka yesterday for Wellington, to join the police force. FISHING. Reports from various anglers in the district indicate that fishing during this week had shown a considerable improvement, and that the rivers are in excellent condition. Fishing in the Opihi at Burke's pool, on Wednesday night, Mr D. Cain landed, amongst others, a very fine trout which turned the scale at 7ilb. Several other fishermen secured baskets of seven to fifteen fish, ranging in weight from ilb to 2ilb. The most popular flies that are being used at present are the red tipped governor and the red spinner. The Rangitata is reported to be in excellent fishing condition, and anglers there are meeting with a fair measure of success. On Tuesday morning Mr R. Irvine, of Timaru, landed eight fish, the heaviest weighing 301 b, and Mr H. Nicholas secured two on the same day which turned the scale at 201 b and 111 b respectively. Mr V. Nicholas, of Temuka, and Mr Segar of Christchurch, also had good-sized fish to their credit.

DRUNKENNESS. At the Police Court yesterday, before Mr A. Lowrie, J.P., a first offender was convicted and discharged for being found drunk in a public place.
