SOUTH SCHOOL.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the South School Committee was held last night. Present—Messrs W. Gibb (chairman), T. G. Jacobs, A. W. McNeil, F. E. Stewart, L. Davis, F. Matthews, S. Houston, and W. J. Dickson (secretary). Headmaster’s Report. The headmaster (Mr J. Methven) reported as follows:—Since the reopening of the school, forty new pupils had been enrolled, while twenty had left, leaving the roll number practically unchanged since the last committee meeting. The roll number at present was 475. The annual swimming sporte were held on February 26, and the number of competitors was even greater than usual, there being keen competition in all events. The School Sports Association had made arrangements to hold its annual swimming sports on Friday, and the entries from the South School were quite up to the average.
Correspondence. The "Education Board wrote stating that the resignation of the headmaster, Mr J. Methven, had been accepted. The Timaru Borough Council forwarded a letter stating that a valuation had been obtained of the closed portion of Victoria Street, containing 1 rood 18 perches, the value being £l2O. The two corners, one at King Street and the other at Craigie Avenue, were valued at £ls and £lO respectively. It had been decided by the Council that when the property was transferred, the School Committee should bear the cost, but under the circumstances the Council had reconsidered this. The expenses would be £ls, and if this, and the value of the corners to be acquired by the Council, were offset against the value of the land to be transferred to the Committee, it left an amount of £BO due to the Council. Mr Gibb moved that a deputation be appointed to wait on the Finance Committee of the Council, to discuss this matter with them. Messrs W. Gibb, F. Stewart, and W. Dickson were appointed to act as the deputation. General. The chairman said that he had received a number of tickets from the School Committees’ Association, for the conference of the Federation of School Committees, to be distributed among members of South Canterbury School Committees. Mr Gibb said that he hoped that as many committee-men as possible would attend the conference, and also the programme of entertainments that had been arranged for the visiting delegates. Accounts amounting to £3/10/11 were passed for payment.
