THE WHEAT POOL.
DISSATISFIED GROWERS. A meeting of dissatisfied wheatgrowers, which will be held in Timaru this week, was referred to by Mr D. E. Lewis at a meeting of the Geraldine branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union on Tuesday night. “At times I have felt a bit dissatisfied myself,” remarked Mr Lewis, “but the Pool is certainly a thing we should support. It is a means to an end.” When he first saw that Pool wheat had been sold forward for 5/9 he thought it too little, but more recent information seemed to disclose the wisdom of the step. Mr Markham: “I think that wool will also have to be pooled in years to come.” The president (Mr J. McLean) remarked that there was a hostile feeling against the Pool in 6ome quarters, but there was no doubt that if it kept going it would eventually come out on top. Mr Lewis: “It is bound to come out on top.” Mr T. Wooding: “They would not get so much for their wheat if it was not for the PooL” The president remarked that the Pool had started in the very worst year it could have done. There was no doubt that if it had not been for the Pool farmers would have only received about 4/- to 4/3 for their wheat last year instead of 5/9. There might be some delay in the final payment, but if it had not been for the Pool all the farmers would have probably had to be satisfied with in tha vicinity of 4/for their wheat. Mr Wooding: “A lot of them can’t see that.” The president Baid that the Pool had not yet had a chance to prove its worth. A member: “If we could keep the speculator out, the farmer would be better off.”
