At the Police Court, Thomas George Wise (28), collector, was remanded for sentence on a charge of obtaining money by false pretences. It was stated by the police that accused went into business as the New Zealand Trust Executors' Agency, Mortgage, Finance and General Investment Association, with a capital of £5. He collected fees for the valuations of property submitted as securities, and stalled off inquirers, finally telling them that their securities were not good enough. Accused, in evidence, said he had handled about 500 applications for loans, and that about one-third had been successful. He believed that his valuations were genuine. Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M.. said there were ten instances where he was not disposed to accept the good faith of the accused. He would discuss the case with the Probation Officer, and take into consideration the fact that the accused refunded money in several instances.
