AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

CLUB NAME CHANGED. A general meeting of members of the Timaru Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was held last night. There was a fair attendance of members. Mr H. H. Fraser was in the chair. The chairman said that the meeting had been called for the p- pose of discussing the matter of changing the name of the Club, so as to enable them to take over for competition, a challenge cup, which was at present held by the trustees, Messrs Knubley and Jones. The cup was worth a great deal of money, and it would be a valuable addition to the club’s trophies. Mr E. D. Mcßae would, however, explain to members present what conditions were attached to the holding of the cup. Mr Mcßae said that Mr McLean and he had interviewed the trustees in regard to the cup, and they had agreed, subject to certain conditions, to hand the cup over to the Club. Mr Mcßae said that the conditions stipulated that the name of the club should be changed £rom the Timaru Amateur Athletic ad Cycling Club, to the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club. Also that the cup should be competed for under certain conditions that would be approved by the trustees. The cup must also be insured, and always to remain the property of the club, three trustees were to be appointed to be responsible for the cup. The speaker said that the hardest task would be to inaugurate a suitable competition for whien the cup would be the principal trophy. The trustees were interested in the club, and they would do anything they could to help the club on. The chairman suggested that the cup should be competed for by club members only. Mr C. W. Cameron said that he did not agree with the chairman’s suggestion, as it might take interest away from the cup if confined to members of the club only. He thought that the cup should be open for competition through-out New Zealand, as this would enable the club to obtain the best talent in the athletic field in the Dominion. This would give the local runners an opportunity to try out their paces against crack athletes. Mr Mcßae then moved that the club accept the offer of the cup from the trustees, subject to the conditions laid down. The motion was carried. Mr Cameron then gave notice to move that the name of the club be changed from the Timaru Amateur .Athletic and Cycling Club, to that of the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club. A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs E. D. Mcßae, E. Eastwood, C. W. Cameron and A. Harper was set up to interview the trustees of the cup, and to draw up conditions under which the cup could be competed for, these to be presented at the next meeting. On the motion of Mr Mcßae it was decided that the cup should be for individual competition only, as otherwise the club would be faced with the problem of finding miniature cups for teams, and it was considerably easier to manage individual competitors than a whole team. It was left in the hands of the chairman to approach the Old Boys’ Association in regard to ascertaining whether the Association and the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club, could run a sports meeting together at Easter. Also if the Association would consent to the Club controlling the whole fixture. It was decided that an evening athletic meeting be held on Thursday week, including running and cycling events, and an inter-club relay race.
