ST. ANDREWS.

MOTHERS’ UNION. The Mothers’ Union held their first meeting of the year in the Parish Hall, St. Andrews. Correspondence in connection with the Maori Girls’ College was received, and it was decided to do nothing in the matter until a larger attendance was assured. The secretary acquainted the meeting with the arrangements in connection with the forthcoming festival at St. Mary’s, on Thursday next. Several members voiced their intention of attending. Arrangements were made to hold the annual meeting next month. At the conclusion of the meeting, afternoon-tea was dispensed. THE LIBRARY. At a meeting of the Library Committee, there were present:—Rev. J. Hay (chairman), Mesdames Higginson and Kane, Miss Hammond, Messrs Wimsett and Higginson, and the secretary ("Miss R. K. t ßeilly). A new list of rules was drawn up, and it was decided to place a copy in the books. It was decided to purchase a number of new books, and the librarian was instructed to make a selection at once. The Committee hope that the addition of the new books would be an incentive for subscribers to use the Library more freely. The resignation of the secretary and librarian (Miss R. K. Reilly) was received, and accepted with regret. Mr H. L. Wimsett was appointed secretary in the meantime, while Mr C. F. Higginson undertook the duties of librarian until a permanent appointment is made. HARVESTING. Harvesting in the district is in full swing. The continued warm weather is much appreciated by farmers, who have been able to get in their grain under excellent conditions. Binders and threshing machines are to be seen in all directions, and despite predictions to the contrary, the harvest would appear to be a very plentiful one. FISHING. Fishing in the district has been most disappointing of late, herrings being the only fish offering. Local fishermen are hoping that, with the advent of nor’-wester conditions, it may improve.
