CROQUET TOURNAMENT.

CONCLUDING DAY’S PLAY. Last Saturday saw the final rounds of the South Canterbury Croquet Association’s three day tournament played off, but owing to some of the matches taking longer to finish than expected, three matches are to be decided some time this week. These are the A handicap singles, between Mrs Taylor and Miss Wilson; and the semi-finals and finals of the B Level singles. The Oamaru, Ashburton and Temuka Croquet Clubs had been very successful in several of the matches, their representatives putting up a splendid performance on strange lawns. Special mention might be made of the Geraldine Club, who, although they were unable to compete in the tournament, donated a trophy for competition in the B championship singles. This was a very generous act on the part of the Geraldine Club, and was greatly appreciated by the members of the Association. , Entries for the tournament totalled 160, and during the three days 116 matches were contested. The tournament has been a great success in every way. from both a financial and social point of view, and the general standard of play was exceptionally good. The handicapping was excellent, At the conclusion of Saturday’s play, the prizes won during the tournament were presented by the Association’s President, Mrs W. Taylor. Mrs Taylor said that the tournament had been a great success, and everyone had enjoyed themselves fully. (Applause.) The Association were in hopes that they would be able to hold a similar tournament next; year, and if the enthusiam shown during this year’s tournament was kept up, there would be every possibility of this happening. Timaru Clubs had thought that they would carry off all the prizes, but Ashburton, Temuka and Oamaru, had by their brilliant play prevented this. The performance of these clubs, in winning several matches, on strange lawns, was very creditable. Mrs Taylor said that she had only one more thing to say, and that was to J thank the secretary, Mrs A. A. E. Pennefather, for all the work that she had put into the running of the tournament. No one knew just how much work an affair of this description entailed, and Mrs Pennefather had taken the greatest part of the work on herself. Mrs Taylor then called for three cheers for Mrs Pennefather, which were most heartily given. The prizes were then presented, each recipient receiving a round of applause. The following are the results of the final day's play:— A Level Singles. Mr Hart beat Miss Wilson 26-24. y Mr Hart beat Miss Bremner 26-3! A Level Doubles. Final Round.
