TAX ON PETROL.
MONEY FOR ROAD SCHEMES. (United Press Association- -Bv 31ectrio Telegraph—Copyright.) CANBERRA, February 22. The Premier’s Conference decided to cancel, as from June next, the Federal grant in aid of roads, in favour of a new arrangement under which the Commonwealth will distribute among the States the equivalent of 2id a gallon, derived from the petrol tax. The £2,000,000 accruing thus to the States must be used in the construction and maintenance of roads. The suggestion that the petrol duties be increased was held over, the Federal representatives pointing out that there were certain difficulties in the way.
