M.C.O. v. SOUTH AUCKLAND. LOCAL TEAM’S MODERATE SCORE. By Telegrach—Press Association. HAMILTON, February 19. Playing at Hamilton to-day, in beautiful weather, before a large attendance, South Auckland opened a match against the M.C.C. team. The wicket was in splendid order. Dawson and Duleepsinhji were omitted from the English team, Cornford being twelfth man. The home side won the toss, and going in to bat were all out for 86 at 2.55. Winger and Cassidy opened, the partnership being dissolved when Winger played a fast one on from Nichols. Thomas opened cautiously, but eventually snicked a short one to Woolley off Barratt. Badeley was next, and after contributing eight was clean bowled by Worthington. Garrard entered into a careful partnership with Cassidy. Cassidy fell a victim to Worthington, clean bowled, his tally being seven for 55 minutes' play. Slceet joined Garrard, and after opening slowly brightened matters up. At 56 Garrard stepped out to Bowley and was caught by Benson. After the luncheon adjournment Skeet, who had been joined by Hawke, stepped out to Bowley and lifted him for two sixes. Hawke was clean bowled by Barratt, Patrick replacing him. Skeet, at 27, was bowled by Worthington. The tail did not make a good showing, the total closing at 86. Bowley and Benson opened for M.C.C., to the bowling of Everest and Johnston. With the score at 16, Hawke relieved Everest, and with his second ball bowled Benson, but the umpire had signalled “no ball.” Runs were coming slowly, the batsmen taking no chances. Bowley had a life when a fast return by Hawke nearly had him run out. At the tea adjournment the Englishmen had put on 39 for no wickets. Runs continued to come steadily on resumption. With the total at 72 Patrick replaced Going, and the batting was much brighter at this stage. The South Auckland total was passed at 5 o’clock without loss. With the total at 95 Bowley was bowled by Hawke with 48 to his credit. Turnbull followed, and contributed 11 before being given out l.b.w. to Winger. Nichols joined Benson, and runs came freely, this partnership bringing 150 up. Benson was brilliantly caught in the slips by Going, for 76. He had given a bright display, hitting out freely. Gilligan joined Nichols, and stumps were drawn soon after with 161 for the loss of three wickets. The scores were as follow:
