ZAMBESI BRIDGE.

ANGLO-PORTIJGUESE NEGOTIATIONS. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph- -Copyr. ght.) (Received February 18, 7.30 p.m.) • LONDON, February 18. Asked, in the House of Commons, whether negotiations had taken place place with the Portuguese Government regarding, the construction of the Zambesi bridge, Mr Arthur Henderson (Foreign Minister.) said that on July 2 last, Sir Wiliam Osborne, British charge d’affaires, at Lisbon, informed the Portuguese Government that the British Government had for some time past been considering the question of constructing the bridge, and were contemplating the possibility of guaranteeing from the Imperial funds, the necessary sum Sir W. Obsorne expressed a hope that in the event of the Britisn Government deciding to participate in the venture, the Portuguese Government would faciliate the construction of the bridge, and generally extend their goodwill towards the scheme. In a reply received oii August 1, the Portuguese Government pointed out that the proper guarantees had already been given, in connection with the existing concession. The Portuguese Government added that, in the absence of further particulars, they could not make a definite statement, but they gave assurances that they were anxious to faciliate the projected enterprise, in every way possible.
