MAGISTRATE’S COURT. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning, before Messrs P. Grant and d’A. S # . Grut, J.P.’s, Kenneth Finlayson was charged that, on February 17th at Waimate, he was in a state of intoxication whilst in charge of a motor car. Defendant entered a plea of guilty. Sergeant Turner stated that at 3.45 on the previous afternoon Constable Marsh noticed defendant under the influence of drink in the main street, and later saw him enter a car in John Street and attempt to drive away. The constable stopped the car and arrested

defendant. Frequent complaints had recently been received by the police in regard to defendant coming into Waimate and driving home under the influence of liquor. Asked by the Bench if he had anything to say, defendant stated that he had never been in trouble before, and had never had an accident all the time he had been driving a car. He did not use the car in connection with his work,, but used it to drive into town. The Bench said that they did not ' wish to be hard, but would convict defendant and inflict a fine of £5 and. costs, in default 14 days’ imprisonment. He would also be prohibited from holding a driver’s license for a period of six months. Seven days were allowed in which to pay the fine. THE LABOUR MARKET. The recent fine weather has put harvesting operations forward, and binders are busy in all parts of the district. Owing to over eighty local men being at present engaged at the hydro-elec-tric works at Kurow, there appears to be an acute shortage of labour available for harvest, and farmers are find- : ing it difficult to obtain men in sufficient numbers to cope with the work offering. During the past few days all men entering the town in search of work have been eagerly snapped up, and the demand for labour is by no means filled yet. HUNT CLUB. A meeting of the committee of the j Waimate District Hunt Club was held : on Saturday night, with the president j (Mr E. C. Studholme) in the chair. | Other members present were Messrs N. A. Rattray, A. Medlicott, A. P. Boyle, j C. C. Douglas, E. C. d’Auvergne, F. | Brown, H. J. C. Harper, H. N. Medli- j cott, R. H. Rickman and J. Waldie. Mrs S. J. Bailey and family wrote acknowledging receipt of a letter of j sympathy sent by the Club. It was resolved that the Country delegates levy to the Canterbury District Committee be included in the amounts to be passed for payment. A statement of accounts in connection with the Hunt Club cabaret showed receipts £45/18/4 and expenditure, £27/10/1, leaving a credit balance of £lB/8/3. Messrs d’Auvergne and A. Medlicott moved that a hearty vote of thanks be passed to the Cabaret Committee, for their excellent work. —The motion was carried unanimously. In reference to the decision of the Club to transfer the Kennels to Mr J. Cochrane’s farm, a deputation waited on the committee by invitation to state their objections to the proposed transfer. A member of the deputation stated that the principal objection was on account of the noise made by the hounds, and the speaker said that his young horses would be frightened. The chairman pointed out that the present huntsmen had several racehorses in training, and that they did not appear to be affected. After the deputation withdrew, the matter was discussed. It was pointed out that the nearest house to the proposed new site for the Kennels was 300 yards distant. It was then decided that the secretary be instructed to write the people concerned, stating that, after giving the matter every consideration, the committee had decided that the Objections lodged could not be sustained. It was decided that the opening meet of the season be held on Thursday, April 10th, and the Master and Mr Douglas were appointed a sub-com-mittee to arrange a card of meets. Accounts amounting to £3/6/- were passed for payment.

The old established hairdressing and tobacconists business next to the Farmers’ Co-op. has been taken over by Mr J. Ryan who will run it in conjunction with his shop in Hunt’s Buildings.
