THE SPEECHLY MILE.
To the Editor of the “ Timaru Herald.” Sir, —Might I encroach on your valuable space to express my admiration for those two or three swimmers, in last Saturday’s Speechly Mile Race, who after covering about fivesixths of the journey, withdrew from the race to assist another swimmer who had collapsed in the water, thus forfeiting any chance they had of being placed. One of these, would, I feel sure have gained a place had he not gone to Parker’s assistance. I would also take this opportunity of pointing out that no following boat was within 200 yards of the scene, they having all clustered to the finishing post to see the first man home. Might I suggest that the swimming officials endeavour to have boats stationed at least every 100 yards along the course in future contests. There is always a possibility of an unfit competitor straining every ounce in such a race and developing cramp and not being able to call on other competitors near him for assistance. —I am etc. PLACED COMPETITOR. Timaru, February 16.
