ATTACK ON “TALKIES"
ACTOR’S DEFENCE OF THE STAGE. (United Press Association —By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received February 9, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, February 9. The inroads of the “talkies” on the legitimate stage continue. Last night the curtain was rang down finally on drama in one City theatre, with Richard Bellairs, an Australian actor, pleading for life in the final scene. Then the curtain rose to display Mr Bellairs in real life, making an appeal that Australia’s own actors should be given a chance. He denounced the American “talkies” in strong terms, and the small audience applauded the speaker. He said that the people were patronising “canned” drama, to the detriment of their own fellow citizens, who were trying to give them clean entertainment. Several shows had closed, throwing hundreds of men and women out of employment. It was not that Australian plays were no good, as some which were unable to get a hearing were having long runs abroad.
