THE RUNNING REVIEWED. (Special to the “Herald.’*) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 8. The weather was warm and calm for the opening of the Metropolitan Trotting Club meeting, and the track very fast. The big prize of the day went to Harold Thorps (who was recently leased by an ex-Timaruvian), with the unlucky Jean McElwyn again in second place. Omaha recorded very slick time in the middle-class twomiler, and qualified for the Trotting Cup. Royal Silk gave a good return towards the lOOOgns. he is reputed to have cost his lady owner, winning the Champion Handicap in very attractive fashion. Ngingo Ngingo and John Jinks both lowered the existing three-year-old record, the Point-trained colt hoisting 3.20 after he had made a slower beginning than either of the two that beat him. He was well handled once he got going, but was not quite equal to the task he had set himself. King Pointer defeated a smart* field in the concluding event after Talent had made a bold bid for victory. Easy for Admiral Bingen. Admiral Bingen was backed down to a very short price in the Spreydon Handicap, showing 800 units more than Jock Bingen, who was twice as well backed as Etta Cole. Trampcrisp broke at the start, and Etta Cole never settled down properly. Mount Royal took up the running from Boneta, Nelson Ata and Admiral Bingen, and this quartette trotted past the mile post in that order, with Audominion and Young Carbine as their only close attendants. There was no change as they commenced the final lap, and it was much the same along the back, except that the gaps had lessened. Boneta broke under pressure at the bend and slightly interfered with one of -the others. Admiral Bingen took charge with two furlongs to go and won comfortably by three lengths from Nelson Ata, who defeated Mount Royal by a couple of lengths. Boneta came on again and finished fourth, half a length behind Mount Royal, and Young Carbine was a good fifth. Admiral Bingen now goes more soberly in his races, and as a result is staying better than formerly. He is one of the improving horses which is benefiting as a result of the system, and another win for him should not be far away. Smart Novices. Thirteen maiden three-year-olds lined up for the Juvenile Handicap, but nearly all the investments were entrusted to Automatic 1532, Erin’s Pointer 1345, and the Lord MatchlightSodium couplet 1227. Of the remainder Silverwood was the only one in much request. Pageant d’Or reared before the start and got both hind legs over a shaft, but he stood quietly and was extricated safely. When the flag fell, Sodium and Reylet failed to go away. Dusolina led out of the straight from Erin’s Pointer, King Cup, and Pageant d’Or. The last-named broke at the back, and when the mile was reached Erin’s Pointer was in command from King Cup, Dusolina, 3ilverwood, with Flossie Harvester handy. Erin’s Pointer and King Cup were two lengths ahead of Dusolina and Silverwood with a round to go, the others with the best prospects being Flossie Harvester, Desert Rey, and Automatic. Racing round the final bend Erin’s Pointer was well clear of Silverwood and Dusolina, with Silverwood heading the remainder. Erin’s Pointer drew away at the home turn and won easily by four or five lengths from Silverwood, who was six lengths in advance of Flossie Harvester. Dusolina, Desert Rey, and Dillon Logan followed at intervals of about a length. The winner is a smartlooking filly by Travis Axworthy, and she made a highly creditable debut by registering 3.25 without being extended. Her dam is Erin’s Logan, who formerly carried the colours of Mr J. Farrell on South Canterbury tracks. Harold Thorpe Again. Bonny Logan was withdrawn from the Midsummer Handicap to enable F. Holmes, who holds an interest in her, to drive Logan Chief, but there were rtill 14 runners. Lindbergh was made j, pronounced favourite, nearly a thousand units in better demand than .Concliff, who was considerably better

backed than Zenith and Athalone. Lindbergh and Pluto lost ground at the start. Zenith went away at a gallop, but did not lose any ground. Jean McElwyn and Harold Thorpe were first to show, but Tom Thumb soon supplanted them, and at the end of half a mile the North Canterbury gelding was showing the way to Jean McElwyn, Zenith, Harold Thorpe, Athalone, Linkman, and Lindbergh. Passing the mile post Tom Thumb and Zenith were just clear of Jean McElwyn and Lindbergh, who were attended by Linkman, Harold Thorpe, and Harvest Child. Leaving the straight for the last time the whole field was closely bunched, with Zenith, Lindbergh, Harold Thorpe, Linkman and Jean McElwyn in leading division. Lindbergh went to the front at the back from Linkman, Harvest Child, Jean McElwyn, King Pointer and Harold Thorpe, and at the bend the favourite was carrying on from Linkman, King Pointer and Harvest Child. Lindbergh led into the straight from King Pointer and Linkman, and looked a prospective winner, but Harold Thorpe came with a great run on the outside and won by half a length from Jean McElwyn, who also came again and defeated Lindbergh by a long neck for second money. Linkman was a length and a half away, just beating King Pointer. Harold Thorpe is raced now by Mr E. R. Husband, who has won two big stakes with the ex-Southlander within a few weeks. Jean McElwyn added another to her long list of seconds in important races, and registered the fastest time of her career. Lindbergh’s failure to begin well, which cost him a couple of seconds and caused him to cover a lot of ground, probably cost him the race. Wrackler was unable to do the 4.21 required to win, although he w’ent a good race, but Concliff again cracked when the test came.

Omaha Qualifies for Cup. Sir Author 1380, the NeersonArikitoa bracket 1297, and Grandlight 1050 were the only candidates seriously considered by backers in the Papanui Handicap. Avenger and Neerson began badly, but the last-named soon made up most of his ground. Hector’s Own was in charge at the end of half a mile from Great Logan, Arikitoa, Sir Author, Omaha, and Neerson, and at the mile Hector’s Own was still a length in advance of Arikitoa, Great Logan, and Sir Author, who were together well clear of Omaha. The positions were unchanged with a round to go, and the same bunch was disputing the lead at the back. Omaha moved up from the far turn, and at the turn into the straight. Hector’s Own was just clear of Omaha, Great Logan and Arikitoa. Omaha finished strongly and won by three lengths from Great Logan, who beat Hector’s Own by four lengths. Arikitoa was eight lengths further back. The placed horses all recorded fast times, Omaha going better than the winner of the big race, and cutting nearly 9sec. off his handicap. Ukelele Lady in Tune. The ponified Australian mare Ukelele Lady (late Pandora) was the popular choice for the principal trotters’ race, showing nearly 500 chances more than Katute. Sarsaparilla was slow to begin and lost over two seconds before he settled to his stride. Ukelele Lady was in front at the end of a furlong from Katute and Dipnoi, but Katute broke at the stand and left Ukelele Lady to go on from Nighborn, Lady Fan, and Clonmel. Ukelele Lady led past the mile from Nighborn, Lady Fan, Proud ata and Tonic. Nighborn was on terms with Ukelele Lady as they left the straight for the last round, with Lady Fan, Tonic, and John Mauritius close up. John Mauritius made a bad break at the back when travelling fast, and at the final bend Ukelele Lady, Nighborn, Lady Fan, Tonic and Sarsaparilla were left to fight out the finish. Ukelele Lady hung on gamely and won by three lengths from Lady Fan, who was a similar distance in front of Tonic. Sarsaparilla was. two lengths further back, a head in front of Etta Cole. The winner, who lathered very freely before the race, looked to be beaten six furlongs from home, but she battled on courageously to notch a meritorious win. Lady Fan put in a good stretch of galloping at one period of the race, and her driver was fined £5 for not pulling her back to her gait quickly enough.

High-Class Three-year-olds. Only a quartette of three-year-olds paraded for the Champion Handicap, but they were four good ones. Ngingo Ngingo was always totalisator favourite about 500 units above John Jinks, who was slightly better supported than the other two. Real Huon dwelt a bit and lost a second, and John Jinks was caught unready and gave away about a second and a half in addition to his big handicap before he gathered top speed. Royal Silk ran to the mile post a couple of lengths in front of Real Huon, who was three lengths in front of Real Huon, who was three lengths in advance of Ngingo Ngingo. When half the journey had been covered John Jinks, who was still last, was closing the gap, and half a mile from home Royal Silk was just a little in advance of Real Huon and Ngingo Ngingo, with John Jinks not far away. Royal Silk and Ngingo Ngingo drew away at the far turn, and at the entrance to the straight were a good way in front of John Jinks. Royal Silk was never headed, and won by two and a half lengths from the favourite, who defeated John Jinks by four lengths. Real Huon, who was never going kindly, was a length and a half further back. Best Finish of Day. Cyone 2562, Kid Logan 1391, Shady Spot 1156, Rolex 1117, was the public’s summing up of the Liverpool Handicap, none of the remaining fourteen receiving serious consideration. Kid Logan whipped round at the start, Rey Logan broke up early, and Fair Wave galloped off the mark. Rolex, Lough Neagh, and Kreisler took up the running, but at the end of three furlongs they were headed by Avonwood, who had established a lead of two lengths from Rolex, Lough Neagh, Kreisler and Ricardo when the stand was reached. At the mile post the older was Avonwood, Rolex, Lough Neagh, Kreisler, Ricardo, Cyone. Cyone had met with trouble on the top bend, and had to battle hard to secure another position. Passing the stand with six furlongs to go Avonwood was just clear of Rolex, who was lees than a length in front of Lough Neagh and Cyone, then came Kreisler, Ricardo, and Shady Spot. Avonwood held command down the back and to the far turn from Rolex and Cyone, with Kreisler making a dash from the next bunch. Rolex and Cyone cut down Avonwood in the straight and were fighting out the finish when Kreisler put in a challenge and in an exciting contest Rolex hung on long enough to win by a head from Cyone, who was a head in front of Kreisler. Avonwood was four lengths away, Lough Neagh being fifth. The placed horses, off 4.40, all registered better than 4.33. King Pointer’s Turn. Kingcraft 2062 was always first choice for the Craven Handicap, but the St. Maura-Bonny Logan combination, the Linkman-Vesuvius couplet. Concliff and King Pointer all topped 1100. St. Maura stood on the mark, Tom Thumb began too slowly to have any chance, and Harvest Child made a mistake in the early stages. Away led to the mile peg from Talent, King Pointer, Linkman, and Billy Sea, and this bunch raced past the stand fol-

lowed by Bonny Logan, Concliff, and Harvest Child. At the back Talent and King Pointer ran past Away, who was closely pressed by Vesuvius and Bonny Logan. Talent led round the home bend from King Pointer, Linkman and Bonny Logan, but once in the straight King Pointer ran to the front, and won decisively by a length and a half from Talent, with Bonny Logan and Vesuvius coming home at similar intervals.
